Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Grossi.
Cristina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was playing collegiate soccer at Loyola and was going to school to be an orthopedic surgeon. When I suddenly torn my ACL and needed surgery. While in the hospital, I asked the doctor to tell me what his day looked like and he explained to me that he started at 6 am and ended at 10 pm. I thought to myself that I wanted a family one day and I wanted to be able to have a life. I wanted to work to live not live to work. So, I decided right then and there that I did not want to be a surgeon but that I still wanted to work with muscles, bones and athletes.
My father was a physical therapist amongst many other titles in the Air Force and he suggested that I should be a chiropractor. He said that I was very good with my hands, I was smart, and knew that I ultimately wanted to be my own boss. So, I did.
I graduated in 2000 and worked for several other doctors until I decided to branch out on my own. I started my own practice in Somerville back in 2004 and haven’t look back since. I wanted to be the local doctor that my patients ran into at the bank, around the corner, or at the dog park. So, I moved to Somerville shortly after opening Union Square Chiropractic. I knew then that this area was hip and cool and I loved all the different cultures and lifestyles that this city had to offer.
Has it been a smooth road?
Like any new business, finances were always a struggle. It was very difficult to find office space that I could afford. So being the savvy business woman, I came across a space that was way too big and expensive for my needs. I asked the landlord at that time if he would be willing to split the storefront and that I would help get someone else to take the other side of the space. He took a chance and I made it happen. I also remember when I first opened my office and did not live here yet, that I slept many nights at the office to make sure that all my work was done. I also couldn’t afford the electricity and instead of not being able to pay, I would burn candles and make an “atmosphere” for healing. Not to mention, that I couldn’t hire anyone so I was a one woman show. I answered the phones, did the billing, and cleaned the toilets.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Our city is excellent in providing diverse cultures. Entertainment and access to many other parts of the world. One thing that this city lacks is common courtesy. Growing up in the south, I was raised to say please and thank you and ask how a person was doing. I feel what makes Boston a hub for progress in getting stuff done is also what makes this city tough to crack.
