Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Nicolas.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a child, I knew I wanted to go into healthcare. I graduated with a degree in Health Science. I worked in the health field throughout college and post-graduation. Health and fitness have always been a part of my life.
Health is a dynamic process that is always changing. As our lifestyles changes, our level of health changes so I am continuously looking for ways to incorporate health and fitness into my lifestyle. I had reached a point in my career where I was feeling unfulfilled. I was in what seemed to be a great leadership role that just ended up being a negative environment and the gym was my outlet.
Four months into my position I quickly realized that my place of employment didn’t align with my personal values and that my employer had no interest in my professional growth. Being physically active and eating healthy was something that I enjoyed. I wanted to combine my passions to inspire others to take control of their health but I knew that many people don’t enjoy the gym so I wanted to offer something that people would enjoy doing.
I started Pink Sunday while working my full-time job. After three years I had reached my breaking point and decided to leave and focus on the things that added value to my life and impact others. That was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I knew my passion and my dedication would see me through.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Running a business certainly has its challenges. The pivot from Private Healthcare Management to running my own Non-Profit Full time was smooth because there is so much passion behind the organization. However, I think any non-profit will agree that access to sustainable funding is a challenge. Luckily we’ve been able to create a model for survival which has allowed us to scale without compromising quality.
Pink Sunday – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Pink Sunday is a Non-Profit Organization dedicated to promoting the importance of Women’s Health and Wellness by offering physical fitness programs sports programs and wellness workshops. I started Pink Sunday 5 years ago as an attempt to empower women to be healthy and to build a community of women supporting each other in a unique way. That unique way was through Flag Football.
When I started Pink Sunday it was a Women’s only Flag Football Tournament in support of Breast Cancer. Since then Pink Sunday has grown into a collaborative organization with a member base of over 100 women from the greater Boston area & RI & we recently added a very personalized fitness program for women called pink fit. Our aim is to increase self-development, self-esteem, physically active and healthy lifestyles & we’ve been successful at doing so.
I’m truly proud of the genuine impact our organization has had on peoples lives, the growth of the organization, the individuals that are a part of it and the genuine relationships that have formed through the organization. We have an amazing community of individuals that fully embrace and support our mission.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc? Our plan is to continue to scale and expand to different locations. I’m looking forward to the growth of our fitness program and adding a nutrition program in the near future.
