Today we’d like to introduce you to Adasha Sage.
Adasha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in a religious commune called the Twelve Tribes. I left at age 15 where my aunt took me in for a little bit. I was really lost in a big scary “outside” world and not sure what or where I wanted to go in life. I will never forget one day my other aunt was going through chemo for breast cancer and asked me to rub her shoulders.
She loved it and told me I was good at it. I think at that time in my life I was so impressionable and the fact that I did something that made her feel so good made me feel really happy. A few years later I was attending community college for nursing and it just didn’t seem to fit.
One night I couldn’t sleep and started thinking about what I really wanted to do. Maybe something I could do while traveling. At that point, I knew I wanted to do something different but that was involved in helping people. I grew up very healthy so always had an interest in health.
At 2 am I decided to get up and go on the computer since I couldn’t sleep and an add for Spa tech in Plymouth popped up. I clicked on it and it was like a light bulb went off. That’s what I want to do! Massage Therapy. I was instantly brought back to my aunt who had now passed of breast cancer and it was like she was speaking to me.
So I signed up for night classes while waitressing/bartending during the day. I graduated in 2005 and began my business in 2006. I was lucky enough to work in an amazing office with a chiropractor, acupuncturist and natural pathic dr who also specialized in cranial sacral therapy.
These people became like Family to me and I learned so so much from each of them including the office manager. I would not be where I am today without them. I was doing a lot of deep tissue and sports massages at the time and was interested in incorporating more relaxing, energy, spa treatments.
A close friend of mine was moving her hair salon at the time and was looking to rent out the upstairs space to include Spa to her salon. I had been at the chiropractic office for about years and it seemed like a change would be good so that’s what I did. Thankfully it was only moving an exit down and most of my clientele followed me.
I’ve done a lot more energy, spa work since then and have been able to incorporate that into my business. I currently work a couple days a week at Mirbeau in The Pinehills and the rest of the week I am the Spa at Sage Therapeutic. I could not be more grateful or proud of how far I’ve come since the terrified girl I was at 15. I have met so many amazing people and have had many wonderful clients who I’ve become very close to over the years. My love for massage shows through my work.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have had many obstacles. Most of which are balancing family life and a business. My 2 younger brothers followed me out of the commune and we were lucky enough to all live together and stay close. One of my brothers has 8 and 11 yr old boys which the Mom has not been much a part of so I have been Mom/Auntie which I love but it, of course, came with its struggles.
They were only a couple years old when they came to live with us full time. But we figured it out and it was all coming together when 2 years ago I lost my baby brother. That by far was the hardest thing I have been through yet. Esp bc of where we came from and how close we were bc of all we’d been through. It hasn’t been easy but I have grown tremendously through going through that. I have noticed my work different since that loss. I feel a lot more which can be tiring at times but helps a lot with my Massage work.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sage Therapeutic Massage story. Tell us more about the business.
I offer Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal, hot stone along with a few wraps and body treatments. For me, every Massage is different based on each client’s needs. I love my regulars because the more I work on a client the more I get to know their body and it just becomes a really nice smooth manipulation of the muscles.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
My next goal would be to incorporate a nice tub and shower to be able to add scrubs
