Meet Trailblazer Rachel Dlugos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Dlugos.

Rachel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been crafty since day 1: painting, drawing, ceramics, bookbinding, calligraphy, etc. After graduating art school, I pursued a career in graphic design which has me sitting at a computer for 10+ hours a day. I get to be creative, but it’s not the same as physically making something and getting my hands dirty. When my career shifted from print design (at least, I could print out what I designed) to digital/UX, I really needed an outlet without clients and deadlines — so I could make what I wanted. I started making the jewelry that I wanted to wear and couldn’t find anywhere else.

Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest challenge is balancing my real job (design) with my fun job (jewelry). I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything that needs to be done and when push comes to shove. Another Game of Mine always takes the back seat. But, I’m grateful that my fun job will continue to be fun because I don’t have the pressure of having to earn a living from it. I make jewelry because I want to, not because I have to.

We’d love to hear more about Another Game of Mine.
I specialize in minimal polymer clay jewelry inspired by geometric or abstracted organic shapes. At craft fairs, the feedback I get most often is “that’s so different” (and, I like to think it’s a compliment). All of my beads are made by hand, so each necklace or set of earrings is truly one of a kind. My pieces are sleek and modern without being too serious.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Everyone gets the same 24 hours in a day, make time for your passions.
