Life and Work with Anne Drogin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Drogin.

Anne, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m so happy to say that Acupuncture for Everyone just turned 10 years old! Personally, I started in college becoming interested in social justice related movements. It was the time of anti-apartheid protests and I also used to take the N.O.W. bus down to D.C. to march for women’s rights and gay rights. I did an internship in college at a battered women’s shelter and continued over the years to work in two other battered women’s shelters and another shelter for women leaving psychiatric hospitals. I went to Divinity School (at the Women’s Theological Center and at Harvard) and did a social justice related Master of Divinity. One of my first jobs out of college was at the Women and AIDS Risk Network where we provided services to women at risk for HIV because they had injection drug using partners.

While I was there, I toured the AIDS Care Project – one of the only public health acupuncture clinics devoted to people with HIV and AIDS in the country. Working there became my dream job. Soon after, I went to acupuncture school and graduated just over 20 years ago! My first job out of acupuncture school was at the AIDS Care Project. This clinic was my inspiration to open Acupuncture for Everyone where people could afford to come for as ling as they needed to get well. On a side note, I have also taught for years at the New England School of Acupuncture where I have taught in classroom settings and also supervised students in Public Health settings such as Roxbury Comprehensive Health Center, Dimmock Health Center and the Shattuck Hospital. The latest job I’ve added to my life is Oncology Acupuncturist at Dana Farber Cancer Insitute.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One struggle is the low pay associated with jobs that help people. I have often had to rely on my partner’s good job and benefits to make my job possible.

Please tell us about Acupuncture for Everyone.
At Acupuncture for Everyone, we treat everything treatable with acupuncture. Some of the most common themes are fertility, aches and pains, migraines, emotional concern such anxiety and depression, repetitive use disorders, insomnia, IBS…

One of the aspects of our clinic I’m most proud of is the high quality of our practitioners and the deeply caring attitude they provide. Another thing, I’m proud of is our very diverse patient population.

One thing that sets us apart from other community acupuncture clinics is that we run on a slower schedule so that our practitioners really have time to understand our patients and do a thorough differential diagnosis.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Neither of my parents graduated from college but that didn’t stop them from having a deep interest in lifetime learning.
