Meet Ann Co of Art By Ann Lang Mun Co in Quincy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Co.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I found photography after going through a rough patch in my life. During that part in my life I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. I was drowning in unhappiness, like I was neither going up nor down, just floating there. Just nothing, nothing was driving me, dreamless, aimless etc. It was then that I decided that I wanted to be happy, so I decided to quit my job that was draining me.

I found the camera in 2011, during that time I was trying everything and anything. On a whim I went out and brought a Nikon D3000 kit set. I knew nothing about photography at all at the time. I drive up to Cannon Mt. and spent the whole day up there. I came back with around 500 photographs and had never felt so at peace. So I decided to enroll myself into Photography school and never looked back.

I went into photography school wanting to only photograph landscapes, but after being exposed to how big the photography industry is I ended up focusing on commercial work and portraiture. My main work revolves around products, Food and portraiture. Currently I am an in house photographer for a car parts company and also have my own studio Art By Ann Lang Mun Co for my projects outside of my day job.

Looking back the first 2 years of being in the industry were so difficult nothing prepares you for the real world. After going through it myself, I realized if I did not go through all that I would not be the artist I am today.

Has it been a smooth road?
There were a lot of struggles in the first two years. I dealt with doubt, loneliness, exhaustion and biting more than I can chew. Photography school doesn’t prepare you for what comes afterwards. They are great at giving us the tools and space to hone our craft, but once we get out there we get it something else. Since I was my own brand starting out I could not afford to hire anyone, but I had loans to pay so I took ever job that came my way. I was happy and still am with doing what I love for my job, but there were times where I was so booked that weeks by and I was running on autopilot. I ended up crashing for a few days due to exhaustion.

There are many photographers out there now and then.
How to make yourself stand out from your competition?
Am I charging too little?
Am I doing too much?
Etc. the list goes on.

So much stuff in the beginning, but I have to say it was all worth it

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I was born in Boston and cannot imagine having myself based out of another city. I love taking clients to the Common, strolling around the brick homes in Beacon Hill and hanging out at the restaurants. For my clients Boston is special to them to so it’s like hanging out with new friends. The city is large enough and small enough, cozy.

Something I dislike is the parking and inner city traffic – but it’s like this everywhere.
