Today we’d like to introduce you to Captain Jake Curley.
Captain Jake, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was first introduced to the sportfishing world by my Father. At the age of 8 years old my dad brought me along on my first offshore fishing trip where we targeted tuna south of Martha’s Vineyard. After this first trip, I was hooked.
As the years went on and my love for fishing grew I began working for a local fishing tackle builder, during the summers. After the unfortunate passing of my former boss, I decided to venture out on my own and founded “JC’s Offshore Tackle”, at the age of 17. I have been selling my products online and to fishing stores from Cape Cod to Florida.
Since my family had always owned boats I made a deal with my parents that I could turn their boat into a profitable business venture by earning my captains license and chartering the boat in the summer. I attended night classes at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and was able to acquire my 50-ton masters’ captains license at the age of 18.
This coming summer will be my 3rd full season running inshore and offshore charters out of East Falmouth, Cape Cod. We specialize in Canyon fishing where we travel roughly 100 miles south of the Cape and the Islands to target Tuna, Marlin, and Swordfish.
With the support of my parents, I have been able to do what I love while gaining the business experience necessary to run two companies.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As a young man in an industry primarily dominated by an older group of men and women, I have needed to prove my abilities and worthiness as both a fisherman and young entrepreneur. Working long tedious hours building tackle and prospecting potential vendors I have built up a respectable client base for JC’s Offshore Tackle.
The successes of my company can be attributed to my persistence and determination as a young entrepreneur to close deals and prove my effectiveness, despite my age. As one of the youngest charter captains in the northeast, I have seen the surprise of my guests when they realize I am not the status quo middle-aged charter captain.
Although my guests have never openly exhibited concern about my abilities as a captain, their surprised looks have driven me to do everything in my power to provide the best fishing experience possible. I use my young age as motivation to excel in this industry, and put to rest any potential concerns with my ability to prosper as a charter captain and entrepreneur.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
JC’s Offshore Tackle specializes in high-quality offshore fishing tackle primarily for Tuna, Sharks, and Marlin. I build all the products myself to ensure consistent quality. As a company, we work to provide the highest quality product at a great price.
What sets JC’s Offshore Tackle apart is the fact that all new products go through rigorous testing aboard Jakamo Sportfishing Charters before being introduced to the public. The fact that my products are made for fishermen by fishermen helps me sustain a stable customer base and form relationships to benefit both myself and my customers. I encourage my customers to stay in touch with me to share information so everyone can have a better shot at a great fishing trip.
What sets Jakamo Sportfishing Charters apart is the vessel itself. The “Jakamo 2” is a brand new 39′ Invincible center console. The boat is maintained to the highest degree to ensure the cleanest and most enjoyable fishing environment for my clients. In addition, the “Jakamo 2” is powered by triple 300 Yamaha giving us a cruising speed a 45 mph.
The speed of our boat allows us to spend more time fishing and less time running out to the fishing grounds. Jakamo Sportfishing Charters is a top end charter company, everything from our vessel to our tackle is intended to give our clients the best possible experience when fishing with us.
As the owner and operator of Jakamo Sportfishing, I strive to create lifelong relationships with all of my guests and make their trip unforgettable.
What were you like growing up?
While growing up I was always intrigued by the ocean and fishing in particular. Whether I was fishing offshore with my dad or simply fishing from shore I always felt in my element.
As the years went on my passions for fishing accelerated and I began looking for the potential of a future in the fishing industry. With the encouragement and support of my parents, I have been able to make progress towards a very stable future revolving around fishing.
