Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Israel.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My photography journey started at Ithaca College when I took an Intro to Photography class and began experimenting with film. I fell in love with the medium, the process, the darkroom and continued to study it throughout my college career.
I moved to New York City the day after I graduated and eventually started shooting anything and everything so I could to get experience and build a portfolio. I used NYC as my inspiration and paved a path for myself shooting editorial and documentary work for blogs, magazines, books, and exhibits.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my biggest struggles as a freelance photographer was learning to say “no” to projects. When I was a bit younger, I said “yes” to pretty much everything that came my way.
At first, this approach definitely helped me grow my business and I advise younger photographers to do the same! But over the years, it started to take me off of a focused creative path and left me with a pretty unmanageable schedule.
I didn’t have time to photograph personal projects and a good chunk of the work I was commissioned to do wasn’t really leading me down the path I was after as a photographer. Who did I want to be as a photographer?
It definitely took some time and practice to learn how to build a well-balanced schedule that feels productive for both my business and my artistic vision.
Sasha Israel Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a photographer specializing in Environmental Portraiture. I like the challenge of trying to convey someone’s story in one image using the environment around them.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was so honored to be the principal photographer for Grace Bonney’s New York Times Best Selling Book ( 2016) “In The Company of Women”, where I photographed over 70 women in their personal workspaces. I love how the images came out and I was so inspired by the stories of the women I was lucky enough to meet.
