Meet Keith Asack of Keep The Edge Studios in Quincy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Asack.

Keep The Edge Studios was started in 2008 while Keith Asack was studying at Berklee College of Music. Converting the basement of a two floor apartment in Boston, Keith set up his project studio as a way to get real life experience while studying at school. In 2010 the studio was doing well enough that Keith decided to dedicate all his time to being a studio owner and engineer and looked for a place to build out his dream studio. Being from the South Shore it seemed Quincy, with the most amount of T Stops, was the obvious choice. Applying for and receiving an SBA loan from South Shore Bank, Keith began construction of the studio in 2011. In January 2012 Keep The Edge Studios opened its doors. Every year the studio adds more equipment and expands into new fields. Starting with just audio, the studio now has a full film department! Keep The Edge has also worked on an array of interesting projects like video games such as BioShock Infinite and The Magic Circle, video for American Idol star Sonica Vaid, and recording albums for nationally touring acts like Sugar Ray and the Bluetones. The studio and Keith have also been nominated for 14 Blues Music Awards, 10 of which will be given in May 2017. From a dream in a basement during college to the leading audio/video studio on the South Shore, Keep The Edge continues to expand into all markets and always leaves each client satisfied and excited to return.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is never easy, especially fresh out of college. Financing was the first big hurdle. It took about a year to get our business documents to the point that we were granted an SBA loan. Once we had the money we then needed to figure out how to build out the space. Since our budget was tight I built the entire space out with one other guy. This took about 8 months to complete. Then the realization hit that this wasn’t a project studio anymore, it was a legitimate business with lots of bills and clients that always expected to be put first. I grew up quick in the first year and learned a lot about dealing with different personalities. Small problems pop up constantly, that’s just the price of doing business. I love doing the audio and video work but things like taxes are just as important to staying in business. I’ve learned to ask a lot of questions and to keep going no matter how big a problem seems.

Keep The Edge Studios – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are an audio/video company. We have 2200 sq. feet of recording space with 6 isolation rooms for audio recording. What really sets us apart is the size of the studio and all the separate rooms. We also have a grand piano! This set up allows us to record an entire band with full isolation so the recording feels like it was done live, because it was, but has the pure sonic quality of everyone being separate. All the rooms have giant glass walls and doors so each player can easily see everyone else. We are also known for the quality of our equipment. We invest a lot of our profits back into the studio and the clients feel it. This is what gives us the opportunity to work on huge video games and big national acts.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Well the easiest marker of success is money. If you are making it then people like what you are doing and keep coming back. For me, though, I look at how successful I am by the reaction I get from people the first time they hear their album completed or see the final cut in their video. The joy that we are able to bring to clients who are new to recording makes all the work worth it. I also judge success by how happy I am. Getting to work every day in an amazing studio with clients who are passionate about music is a dream job. Every day I am thankful that I was able to make this opportunity work.
