Today we’d like to introduce you to Ms. Denise Patnod, M. Ac., Lic. Ac.
Denise decided to venture into a different healing profession at age 40. Excitingly, she chose to leave a 20-year social work career and enter into Traditional Chinese Medicine School at New England School of Acupuncture. Having had acupuncture treatments in her 30’s for acute back pain, she was familiar with the Eastern-Oriental healing methods. Post her full-time studies (199-2003), Denise reported having found her true niche: acupuncture is a fantastic effective mode of Chinese Medicine, it’s great to be in a growing profession. Denise enjoys treating the mind, body and spirit and applies mental health expertise to her patient population.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having left social work at middle age, Denise was fearful to take out loans and in a way, “start over again.” However, being quite enthusiastic – she hung on to the idea that a healthy transformation would be the outcome of graduate school — believing she would learn more skills to help patients heal from their pain. “If I did not take a risk, I would not be in a successful private practice today.”
Business and marketing ideas were hard to grasp for Denise, but with persistence and paying close attention to her graduate mentors — a private practice slowly developed. Setting up business was a rocky road, getting patients to come in for treatment was a challenge. When entering a small business world, one needs to know that effective treatments are always important but marketing is the Key to keeping it going.
We’d love to hear more about Denise Patnod Acupuncture Therapies.
Denise Patnod Acupuncture specializes in pain, infertility and anxiety. Besides, Denise’s practice specializes in: pain, infertility disorders and anxiety. Other ailments that would be addressed with acupuncture are: digestion imbalances, spinal disorders and seasonal allergies.
Patients coming through Denise’s Cambridge based office attest to getting individual attention, feeling listened too, a calmness in the session and positive outcomes. Women who seek support for fertility, i.e., IVF are comfortable with the selected acupoints, receive thorough assessments and, begin to work through their medical stressors.
As needed and with an addition to an acupoint treatment, patients may receive moxa, cupping, brief massage and guided meditation at — no added cost. Patients experiencing anxiety are generally provided with most of the latter treatments. The stress reduction guided meditation is amazing to observe, the patient melts into a restful state and lets go of tight tension in the body. It is an awesome profession to be able to see patients feel better without the use of acute opioid medications!
Many products on the market today for bodyworkers, however, the products in Denise’s office are typically from the Master’s she studied with. For example, quality disposable needles from Japan and Korea are carefully used and she uses organic pain creams for her back pain patients.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
The barriers for females in business may not be as limited as they were a decade ago. However, it was hard to build my self-confidence up 15 years ago. To set-up and effectively run a healthcare practice took lots of mentoring. For at least 2 years, I had observed two fine practitioners/teachers run their acupuncture clinics, Patrick Dumont and Master Kiiko. Thank you to both my teachers for all their support and knowledge. I am grateful to have a successful private practice in Harvard Square, 22 Hilliard Street.
