Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Light.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my site nearly 8 years ago, as a nudge from my then boyfriend (now husband) as a means to give myself a creative outlet, a way to give myself something to create outside of my 9-5 corporate job as a project manager in the security industry. What started as a small site with minimal views, has grown into a true community of people that I consider to be friends, whether we’ve met or not.
As with all things in life, our interests change. We change. What began as a blog about crafting and fashion, has become a stop on the ‘nets for people looking to be inspired by wellness, yoga, positive vibes local businesses as well as seeing true life snapshots from a woman who has great ideas, a lot of vision, but also has two young kids, so those visions don’t always come to fruition… and that’s OK. We’re all works in progress.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are times where the nature of the internet has gotten me down. Algorithms and comparison to others, there are many things that I have found to be a struggle. Creating a true community online can be challenging as well as frustrating but one thing that I always come back to is happiness. Is what I am doing makes me happy? If not, I try not to do it. I love this quote from Malcolm Gladwell “A lot of what is most beautiful about the world arises from struggle”… and it’s true, so I try to take lessons from everything!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Prim and Propah is just my corner of the world. I share anything and everything I’m interested in but also want to help people feel inspired without feeling like we’re all competing. I’m creative and love to paint/sew/glue/etc but sometimes there isn’t time for it all. I take part in wellness events as well as encourage others to do so without intimidation. I’m a lover of yoga for everybody. I write about things I am passionate about, even if they may be uncomfortable.
I want to see things about our world change for the better, from the environmental causes to human rights issues. I love all the people, even if we don’t agree. I also love my family and want to work hard raise humans that love others, show kindness, know their privilege and act accordingly. Showing these journeys through motherhood, creative life and those down days where nothing gets done, that’s my “brand”… just me trying to live my life right and encourage others to do the same, whatever that truth is for them.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve been told that I’ve always been funny and loud, apparently always interchangeable! Growing up, I wanted to be a fashion designer and would doodle hours away. I went back to MassArt in my late twenties to complete the Graduate program in fashion design because it was something that I always wanted to do… so I did it. I think being headstrong and determined, even when I was younger, has carried through into my adulthood. I’ve grown more sensitive in all ways but do believe that I always wanted to be a “helper”, even as a kid.
