Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Boone.
Jordan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I decided in my Senior year of High School that I wanted to be a Graphic Designer. I knew absolutely nothing about design and very little about art in general. Luckily a good family friend, Tim Foley, steered me in the right direction and suggested I look at Mass Art as a potential school choice. After I was accepted, he helped me land my first internship where I was able to make some really amazing connections. Through those people I worked my way into various companies, making even more friends and connections along the way.
Eventually, I found myself at IDEO. My time there was incredibly inspiring, and really got me thinking that working at a traditional agency was not what I wanted to do. But I was hesitant to veer off of the career path I had worked so hard to forge. The words of encouragement and reminders of my youth from various colleagues and mentors was what ultimately catalyzed the change. In April of 2017, Gustavo Barroso (an Industrial Designer and close friend) and I formed Supermouse Studios.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has absolutely been a bumpy road! Even just this past year, we have both learned so much about working with clients and running a business. For one, squaring away the scope and requirements of a project is a really big challenge. At past jobs and internships, all of these things were taken care of for us so it was a new challenge we had to face. But at the end of the day, you learn to roll with the punches and try to treat everything as a learning experience.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a design consultancy. At Supermouse, we offer many services like a mobile app and packaging design. But we specialize in Branding and Web Design. Our process is a big part of what we do, and a key differentiator for us. Our time learning from global design firms and successful agencies has helped us to create a dynamic and forward-thinking approach. We work really closely with our clients to understand their needs as best as possible before we create any concepts. I really believe that the most important battles are fought in the earliest stages of a project.
What were you like growing up?
I was always really interested in music and technology. I grew up competing in youth robotics leagues and playing the Saxophone. My dad is an electrical engineer so I’m sure I picked up some of that from him. But I was always making things. Animations, 3D models, pillow forts, you name it. I have also been very fortunate to find a way to combine both music and technology, in producing music on my laptop.
