Check out Alec Hovey’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alec Hovey.

Alec, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My artistic journey began when I was a baby. Singing songs before I could speak in complete sentences, I always had a passion for music. I grew up in Duxbury, Massachusetts and began playing the trumpet in 5th grade, my father’s primary instrument. Later I switched to the tuba, and fell in love with the sound. Many district festivals, youth orchestras, and auditions later, I decided that I would attend University for music education.

I graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the Spring of 2017 and I accepted my first job teaching general music and chorus at White Brook Middle School in the Easthampton Public School District of Massachusetts. Working alongside Patrick Lennon – band director – I have quickly learned the ins and outs of middle school and I am well on my way to becoming a successful teacher.

As for my photography, I began taking photos in High School. With my Pentax K1000, I took my first photos on black and white film and developed them in my high school’s dark room. Although the process intrigued me, I never looked at photography as something I could actively pursue.

It wasn’t until the Summer of 2017, when I began to explore my love for photography further. I purchased my first DSLR, a Canon rebel t7i, with a variety of lenses and accessories and quickly found my way around Photoshop and Lightroom. Overjoyed with my decision to get back into the art, I have quickly been able to familiarize myself with almost all aspects of photography and will continue to develop my skills to the best of my ability.

Photography allows me to capture the true beauty of the world, and helps me to appreciate everything it has to offer. It is an art that I do not take for granted and wish to continue for the rest of my life.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My photography is created for the purpose of appreciation. As I was growing up, something I definitely took for granted was my eyes. I was always looking toward the future, waiting for the next big milestone in my life. Whether it was my high school graduation, or my acceptance into college, or receiving my first job, I always was looking for the next best thing. Rarely did I ever stop and appreciate my accomplishments or where I was able to get to. Photography helped me to stop thinking about the future and appreciate the now.

There is nothing more special to me than traveling to a beautiful place and taking the time to set up a perfect shot. No matter where I go, shooting has always been a great therapeutic tool for me. Coupled with the fact that art is meant to solicit an emotional experience, I wish to convey the same feeling of peace and acceptance with my consumers. My hope is that people can look at my photography and experience the same appreciation that I feel when I am able to photograph. The world is truly beautiful and I believe that my photography has the ability to capture that overwhelming beauty.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success as an artist merely comes down to how comfortable you are to share your work with others.

As a musician, it is fairly easy to sit in a practice room every day and work on different aspects of your playing until your face turns blue. The real challenge comes from when you step out on that stage and are confident enough to share yourself with an audience. This can be one of the most unbelievable experiences in the world, especially when people enjoy what they hear. As soon as the anxiety subsides and the existential high begins, it’s like you have entered another world. Once you obtain the confidence to share your art with others, you have become an artist.

Photography is no different. Taking photos for yourself is one thing, but being able to share it with others shows you have the confidence necessary to be an artist. This confidence is not easy to obtain, but by working at your art, it will come.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
