Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Callahan.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always been a creative person, I work part time as a hair stylist in a busy Hudson Ma salon but I once I had my kids I was drawn to photography. I was taking photos of my girls on my phone and I wanted better photos so I bought my first DSLR and dove right in. I read a lot and self-taught myself and I am still learning every day. My girls inspire me. Slowly family and friends starting asking me to photograph them and their families and I took off from there. I mostly do outdoor natural light photography but I am learning more indoor lifestyle sessions and I would love to expand to doing fresh 48 sessions with newborns. I love what I do and that keeps me motivated to be better every day. I will never stop learning and growing.
Please tell us about your art.
My photography is my art. My favorite part is that I don’t need anyone’s approval of my photos. I photograph and edit the way I think is best and how it makes me happy. I love that my photos show the real emotions. My favorite subjects are children. They always show their real true emotions and the more candid shots make me the happiest. I want people to see the love in my photos and the true happiness. My desire to for people to have long lasting family memories and smile every time they look at my photos.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Do what you love and don’t stop unless you want to. The best part of art is that it’s your own interpretation and nothing is wrong. My photography may not be what others like but it’s what I love and that’s all that matters to me. I’m learning every day but I wish I learned to be more relaxed behind the camera with families and learning to direct them into more natural poses.
