Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscille Dalexis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Priscille. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I would give pigtails to my High school basketball team on game days. Which later carried on to braiding male hair in college. Each head I did was an opportunity for growth. I exceeded my potential by creating styles and learning new techniques. I style my own hair and received compliments every time I walked out in public. People like my hair, they ask, I do their hair, they love it, then tell their friends and the cycle unfolds.
Being business minded, I was motivated to create an IG page to showcase my artwork and I have been blessed to be successful with it as it still grows.
I’ve gained an incredible amount of information on hair through reading and other avenues. I was fortunate to have opportunities to style models for fashion shows and meet amazing people along the way in the hair, fashion, and beauty industry in Boston and New York City. It became more than hair styling. I realized how much influence it holds to educate while building relationships in your passion and doing it with purpose.
Opportunities I’ve encountered have been affirmations on this unexpected journey. With Cosmetology school to top it off, my hope is that greater things continue.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
If you ever reach a level of mastery, it’s rarely ever a smooth road. You were a beginner at one point. Some things do come natural, while there are always other areas of improvement. I’ve had some interesting experiences along the way, but that’s what makes the journey, using those challenges as a push to level up.
Maintaining the balance! I am a full-time school teacher, totally opposite of being a hairstylist! Although I have found a way to connect the two, there are moments of being overwhelmed because they are both careers to fully commit to with demands of high expectations.
Discipline and consistency are needed to push through.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Protect Yo’ Strands – what should we know?
I currently specialize in protective styles for natural hair. I’m known for being accommodating and patient with my clients and bringing the vision to life. As a businesswoman, styling different people coming in with various levels of knowledge, it’s important to cater to all needs and be attentive to individual request.
My brand’s mission is to have clients:
– Be Healthy – Educate people on hair maintenance; your actual hair or in protective styles.
– Be Creative – Finding yourself in a multitude of styles. Stepping out your comfort zone trying new dos, adding hair decor or color.
– Be Empowered- Instill confidence! Embracing the enhanced you.
Within my brand I am able to combine my passion in hair and teaching by educating elementary and middle school girls on the history of hair, learning how to style and braid, all while they embrace their own strands and build on self-love.
I am proud of what my brand reflects; positive vibes and being you in style.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My clients play a huge role! Without them, I wouldn’t be a hairstylist. The conversations I encounter always have substance and I never complete an appointment without feeling inspired. Over the top reactions like jumping up and down, a big gasp, or simply not moving from their reflection, (Lol) have become ordinary. That right there is motivation.
Clients also support and cheer me on by what they share with me. Selfie posts/messages are my favorite. They tell me, “You should start a website,” You need business cards,” I’m going to tell my friends all about you,” “Thank you for being so flexible,” etc. All of this starts with them; for trusting me with their hair, and for that I have become successful.
