Meet Jayne Patrikas of Maison Esthetique Christiane Bourque Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayne Patrikas.

Jayne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Christiane Bourque and I had been friends for over 20 years when she approached me to open a Spa together. Opening a spa was always on Christiane’s mind as she traveled the world with her all-star hockey husband, Ray.

She is very creative and envisioned the perfect Spa, so we worked together with an architect to get it down on paper. When the initial drawings were established we worked together on everything from the floor plan and traffic pattern to the number of treatment rooms necessary to achieve our goals. Our goal was to create an oasis of peace and tranquility that offered deluxe spa treatments to both men and women

We worked together to form a business plan. I had a business degree and many years of sales and marketing experience, as well as a large network of professional connections. We conducted market research to help make informed decisions about the location, the size of the spa and the product and services we were going to offer. Our business plan was two years in the making.

We both enrolled in Catherine Hinds School of Esthetics to learn more about skincare and the equipment and products that are needed for the business. We are both licensed Estheticians.

In preparation for the new business, we learned how to use each piece of equipment, designed a menu of services, discovered the best product lines and then oversaw the construction and interior design. We worked well together as a team. She has an excellent eye for color and fabric and I learned the importance of creating the proper ambiance. My corporate experience was put to good use in hiring employees and sharing knowledge of business practices. Our entire staff was trained using the Ritz Carlton model “We are ladies and gentleman serving ladies and gentlemen”.

Our unique proposition was to open a luxurious day spa that offered the most advanced treatments to care for your skin and body, with all the amenities of a resort
spa.

Maison Esthetique Christiane Bourque Spa is a 4200 square foot Victorian style building. Its European designed interior radiates warmth and comfort. Our clients are greeted by a professional staff and escorted into our lounge of overstuffed leather chairs and a fireplace. There are locker rooms for both men and women and clients may enjoy the steam, sauna and hot tub before their body treatments.

One of our best features is our location, we are conveniently located just off 128, Route 35 in Danvers. It offers an alternative to busy city traffic and features 18 parking spaces behind the building.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Over the past 12 years in business the biggest challenge has been hiring the right staff. Your staff can make or break your business. This business is all about customer service and working as a team. We have had to make some difficult decisions about staffing changes over the years.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Maison Esthetique Christiane Bourque Spa – what should we know?
Maison Esthetique Christiane Bourque Spa is a full service day spa offering the latest innovations in skin rejuvenation, body treatments, massage therapy, couples massage, hydrotherapy and nail services. We are proud to enter our 12th year in business which is a testament to our talented and caring team of professionals. We continue to bring wellness to our loyal clients with their passion and commitment to excellence. We are known for our state of the art facility that offers our clients the very best treatments and amenities in an atmosphere of luxury and comfort.

We are very competitively priced on all our treatments. With every massage or body treatment, we invite our clients to come 30 minutes prior to their treatment to enjoy the complimentary steam, sauna and hot tub area. We provide robes and slippers in our Men’s and Ladies Locker rooms.

I am responsible for the overall operations at the Spa, as well as the financial and business performance. I develop a yearly marketing plan and budget, analyze revenue and expenses and ensure that we maximize client satisfaction. I oversee the recruitment, induction, training, appraisal and discipline of all employees.

Our amazing staff is what sets us apart from our competition and I am very proud of them. You can build a beautiful building and create ambiance but if your staff is not on board to give the client an outstanding spa experience, you have nothing. They are all licensed and trained professionals and give 110% to their clients. We provide many value-added services to each treatment at no additional cost.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Our family and friends have been very supportive of our business success. A Hinds at Catherine Hinds School of Esthetics was a mentor in helping us set up the facial treatment rooms with the proper equipment, beds, products and treatments.

Karen Slein, my sister, is a Human Resources consultant and she guided us through the hiring process. She also helped with our employee handbook and operations manual.
