Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Karlberg and Olivia Cornell.
Katie and Olivia, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
K + O Photo is the marriage of two photographers’ work and passion. Fortunately for us, the two are one in the same! Let us fill you in on our love story:
In 2012, Katie fell in love with travel and made it her job at EF Education First in Cambridge, MA in the Customer Service department. Then, Olivia did the same shortly after. We met at this job and discovered we had the same passions: Family, Friends, Travel and Photography. Plus we both have a passion for compassion in customer service… we feel it’s important to treat clients or customers according to the Golden Rule and beyond, exceeding expectations whenever or however possible.
For a while, we photographed all these common passions separately as we learned the best ways to “freeze time” through the fancy cameras we always dreamed of owning. Then one day, we decided to take those fancy cameras on a date… the rest is history!
Ever since the winter of 2014, we decided to say “I do!” to helping capture our clients’ special moments and turning them into memories that will last as long as our photography love! Since then we’ve photographed nearly 30 weddings and countless family portraits, engagement shoots and newborn baby sessions.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Olivia and I are wedding and event photographers specializing in natural light photography. Primarily we photograph weddings and engagement shoots, but also have recently opened a studio in Union Square in Somerville, MA so that we can do more family photoshoots, boudoir/glamour shoots or newborn baby sessions. We aim to capture moments that are genuine and not posed… we tend to edit our photos in a way that makes our images look bright, airy and ethereal but still true to the colors and lighting of the real atmosphere in which the photo was taken.
We’re inspired by real people and their love with each other, their friends, their family, their jobs, their dogs… whatever makes them smile the biggest so that we can capture those pearly white teeth and create memories for our clients that make them smile for years to come.
The sterotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
Olivia and I both still hold “full-time day jobs” at businesses or schools where we’re able to make a consistent income, but this choice makes the hustle to keep a full-time side business afloat even more challenging. Fortunately, we have each other to balance this. We think our biggest advice is to surround yourself with a support system… going into business together allowed for us to have someone to lean on at all points of our business: both the highs and the lows.
Bad times are far less scary when you have a friend and business partner to brainstorm with and pull yourselves out of a hole, and good times are so much better when you have someone to share your success with. Of course, not all artistic adventures can be done with a partner, but if you can find someone that believes in you they can be that support system you need when times get hard, financially or otherwise, in your artistic achievements!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can see our work on our website or follow us on Instagram or find us on Facebook. People can support us by referring their friends and family whenever someone is in need of a photographer or book a session with us! We love to collaborate with local business and vendors so that we can support one another, as well.
