Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Laumann.
Kayla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, you would always find my hands in someone’s hair… or rummaging through my moms vanity wanting to play ‘’makeover’. When it came time for me to find my first job as a teenager, a close friend of our family suggested, I apply for a cleaning position at Fisher Experience. Two years flew by, while I was folding towels, sweeping hair, getting lunches, etc. I was now graduating high school and needed to find a cosmetology school. Bruce Fisher helped me narrow down my schools, toured them with me, asked all the right questions I wouldn’t have had a clue to ask! We decided Paul Mitchell the School – Rhode Island was it! I spent a year and a half, Monday-Friday commuting to Cranston Rhode Island and working Saturdays and Sundays to afford the gas to drive back and fourth to Rhode Island the next week. 😜 Upon completing my 1500 hour program at Paul Mitchell, I became a full time employee of Fisher Experience as Bruce Fisher’s personal assistant. In my year assisting him (along with other senior designers), he taught me everything I know. As I earned my own chair and began building a clientele an amazing thing happened – social media! We collided just at the perfect time and I was able to grow my business behind the chair like lightening.
Fast forward to now, I have an amazing career, a large client list and feel compelled to lead others the way Bruce Fisher led me. I love going to local cosmetology schools and sharing my journey and reinforcing that they just made the best decision of their life. Sometimes, I am reminded our industry has a bit of a stigma (“I’ll just go to beauty school cause I don’t know what else to do”) and I’m determined to break it. With a little bit of heart and hustle your income is limitless – and that’s the beauty of our industry! If you go into this industry with the mindset of a “job”, your lucky if you make $30,000 a year. I know there isn’t another CAREER I would be this passionate about and able to make a six figure salary at such a young age. I have big plans ahead of me, stay tuned!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
They say where there is no struggle, there is no success and in such a creative industry beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So sometimes, you design a color/haircut and you think it’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever done… and then, the client looks in the mirror and says she hates it. Ouch. First few times this happens, it’s hard not to take it personally and you almost feel insulted. But, if you step back and learn to have stronger consultation skills, ask better questions and put on your listening ears, you will never be too far off from what the client wants. I suppose there is competition in every line of work and ours is no different. The best advice I ever received was to “stay in my own lane”. If you’re too busy worrying about how well your co-worker is doing, you are wasting time and energy that you could be investing in yourself.
what should we know about @Kaylalaumann.hairdesign? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am most known for balayage and hair extensions. Balayage is a hand painting of highlights that give a more ‘lived in look’ and are super low maintenance. (Win!) The client sees the value in what they pay for when they look in the mirror months after their services and their hair still looks just as gorgeous as the day they left.
Hair extensions can be used for SO many hair scenarios, not just for adding length. I work on a lot of women, some who have experienced hair loss and others who just want the cosmetic effect. It’s the best feeling in the world when you have a woman in your chair with low self esteem due to hair loss and you transform them and they look up in the mirror and their eyes fill up and they say they finally feel beautiful.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I find most of my inspiration through social media, other leaders in the industry and continued educational classes/conferences. I’ve traveled as far as Paris for additional training, thanks to Fisher Experience and L’Oréal Professional.
I love books and podcasts that focus on self achievement and personal growth. I loved the book “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*uck! It doesn’t sound like a self growth book but it absolutely is! It’s self growth in a different way. It’s a book about being real and not having to express an unauthentic happiness. Caleb Maddix is another great inspiration. He definiteley exudes positivity, so it’s nice to have the balance of that book and him. He’s so young and so wise, it’s amazing to watch him speak.
