Today we’d like to introduce you to Paloma Cabrera-Lustig.
Paloma, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In short, my dear friend and yoga teacher/movement specialist, Annie introduced me to the world of yoga and modern dance when I was very young. She inspired me to start gymnastics at 9 years old. After 10 years of competitive gymnastics, I dedicated more of my time to practicing yoga. When I moved to Boston in 2010, I was thrilled to find out that Boston housed some of the most influential and sought out yoga instructors. I was in yoga “heaven”.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Consistency is key. What works for me to overcome a challenge, especially one that scares me, is to keep doing it. No matter the discomfort (i.e. ego discomfort). I begin to realize how strong I really am and how many miles I can go with something completely new and totally terrifying! As an example, before I became a yoga teacher, I had a fear of public speaking (obviously a huge obstacle for the career I was signing up for). I didn’t think I would survive even teaching to my fellow teacher trainees. After receiving my YTT certification, I told myself teaching was my calling and that Ganesh (the remover of obstacles) would get me through the unease, fear and nervousness. So, I consistently taught classes, never turning back and never giving up. Bottom line, I no longer have a fear of public speaking.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Paloma Yoga – what should we know?
I have been teaching yoga (vinyasa) for 3 years. My style of yoga is very much influenced and inspired by the Ashtanga and Iyengar methods. Sometimes, I pepper in some movements and shapes that are unique and explorative. My classes are either structured where you are working up to a postural peak or you are experiencing a full-body flow allowing your external stimuli to enhance your internal experience. My classes will help you learn body awareness through movement and how to release inhibitions.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
When someone really inspires, motivates and steers you in the right direction, never let them go. They are your building blocks for furthering your career.
