Today we’d like to introduce you to Almitra Stanley.
Almitra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As an undergrad at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, I realized my affinity for facilitating the production of art exhibitions and events. After earning an MA in art history with a certificate in museum studies from Tufts University, I spent 20 years curating exhibitions and representing artists. I’ve held positions at several not-for profit and commercial venues, including directing a regional museum and running a commercial gallery in New York City’s Chelsea arts district.
I founded Art Maven Consulting in 2012, providing professional development consultations and career coaching for artists, including private clients, as well as funding organizations that provide grants and services for artists.
In 2016, I became the director of Boston Sculptors Gallery, a dynamic cooperative gallery showcasing innovative contemporary sculpture in the heart of Boston’s SOWA arts district.
Has it been a smooth road?
My entire career has been dedicated to the arts. One of the challenges the industry poses is that while arts professionals are expected to have significant higher education and experience, traditionally salaries and compensation aren’t competitive with other industries. But, I can’t imagine a reality in which I’m not working with artists!

Founded in 1992, Boston Sculptors is a landmark cooperative gallery exhibiting contemporary sculpture, including traditional and emerging media, installations and public art. With exhibitions changing monthly, the space is constantly transformed and a steady influx of new members brings fresh new work to the gallery. In 2004, Boston Sculptors moved from Newton, MA to anchor Boston’s SOWA arts district. It is the only sculpture collective in the United States to maintain its own gallery.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is the home world renown cultural institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which provided a fertile ground for the development of a vibrant gallery scene. As a growing city with a population of well educated professionals, art enthusiasts and collectors, Boston is a receptive audience.
Pricing:
- Works are available for under $100, and many are priced in the $500 to $2000 range
- Major installation pieces and special commissions can sell for as much as $50,000
