Meet Ralph Mercer of Ralph Mercer Photography in Western Suburbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ralph Mercer.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Do you love photography? Do you like to snap photos of your friends, pretty scenery, or anything beautiful and memorable? I do, and have done so since the age of six. Throughout all the phases of my life I have been a photographer. I did not pick it, it picked me! As a kid I photographed parents, pets, and vacations. In high school I photographed for the school newspaper and developed film for friends. While in college I pictured my dorm buddies and girlfriend. Then at art school I gravitated to the camera as my mode of expression. It is not unbelievable that I would go on to practice my passion as a professional photographer, working in the corporate, editorial, and portrait fields. I did it all. Now I am able to do the most exciting, creatively fulfilling work: Fine Art Photography. Making pictures I love to admire and exhibit is the pinnacle of selfishness. You could say I am happy being me!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like everything in life there were challenges! The biggest were learning how to run a business and attempting the alien activity of self-promotion. OK, I’m an artist, now I have to be a business person? Not something I embraced wholeheartedly! It helped that I had a desirable product.

Please tell us about Ralph Mercer Photography.
I have always been known for creatively expressing ideas through the medium of photography. I have illustrated many corporate ideas such as “connectivity” or “emerging markets investing”. Now I choose to explore universal concepts such as the beauty of nature and humanity. I am proud to be crafting pictures that edify, entertain, and are admired for their beauty. As a man I am fascinated by the exotic species known as “woman”. In particular, I want to photograph women of all races and ages discovering and revealing the myriad kinds of talent, beauty, power, and sensitivity they possess.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Most lessons, once they are learned, contribute to valuable knowledge I’d be reluctant to give up. Nevertheless, I’d give this advice to myself; focus on the kind of work that is most rewarding creatively. Fulfillment and satisfaction will result and achievement will come sooner and will be more significant and consequential.
