Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Barros.
Danny, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started working in restaurants and bars when I was a teenager. My first job ever was in a kitchen- mopping floors and making pizzas! As I got older, I tried my hand in a few different fields and then some friends and I started an event promotions and artist management company (D-Squared Entertainment) and I found nightlife to be my true passion. I loved putting so much work into a something and seeing it pay off while meeting so many new people! After doing it full-time for a little over 5 years, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to make it a career- or bartending- so I decided to go back to school and learn the business inside and out and it was the best decision I ever made! I’ve been managing bars and restaurants for about 9 years and now I’m with the Glynn Hospitality Group as the general manager of Hurricane O’ Reilly’s and Boston Sports Grille on Canal Street.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a relatively smooth road. The most challenging part was working full-time while finishing school. It was a big help that I was already doing what I was studying for. Nothing like learning hands on!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hurricane O’ Reilly’s & Boston Sports Grille story. Tell us more about the business.
I’ve been with the Glynn Hospitality Group for the last 3 years- managing Hurricane O’ Reilly’s and Boston Sports Grille. Hurricanes has been opened since 2002 and it’s been going very strong ever since. We’re a lot of fun! We’ve been voted Best Hockey Bar by USA Today and we’re always doing some different events to cater to the TD Garden crowd. We serve some delicious pub fare, offer some great cocktails and feature live entertainment every weekend. We remodeled and opened Boston Sports Grille about 2 years ago. It’s a really cool sports bar with a bunch tv’s and some fantastic food! We host all the Pay-Per- View UFC fights, sometimes with special guest appearances and we have some unique sports memorabilia scattered throughout the restaurant.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The restaurant and bar industry is always undergoing changes, so as a manager, you want to always make sure you’re constantly progressing and learning the market. Whether it’s the technology in POS software, a new social media platform, the latest beer and cocktail trend or the hottest food craze, there will always be so many things to learn and adapt to. That’s one of the things that make this such a fun field to work in.
