Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Ambroult.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started the Wedding Ring Workshops after a client of mine asked me if I would lead them through the process of making their own wedding rings — something she had read about. I agreed and that first session was a total success. I realized how much I love teaching and what a meaningful experience it is to walk couples through the steps involved in the design and creation of such special objects. After that, I decided to make that a big part of my jewelry business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not. I’d say it took me a handful of sessions to figure out the best way to help couples decide what they want their rings to look like and then teach them the best ways to execute that vision. Learning succinct ways to explain and demonstrate some of the techniques to complete beginners has been a process, too. After 7 years of hosting Wedding Ring Workshops, I think I have it down pretty good now and the sessions are fun, relaxing and even romantic for the couple.
AG Ambroult — Wedding Ring Workshop – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a jeweler who creates handmade pieces for everyday wear, as well as fine jewelry pieces and custom, bespoke work. But, my specialty is certainly the Wedding Ring Workshops. There are a few other make-your-own-wedding-ring classes in this state, but I think people who want to make their own rings also care about supporting a local, independent artist, rather than a corporation. I am proud of the environment I create for the sessions — it’s just the couple and myself, so everyone can feel at ease. I have a spread of delicious snacks and plenty of room so everybody can feel comfortable. I love getting to know the couple — hearing the stories of how they met, how they got engaged, the plans for the wedding — by the time they leave we usually feel like fast friends. I send them off with their completed rings, ready to wear, as well as a little gift from me, so that they can celebrate their special day together.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes, it is. There is a large population of young people in the Boston area — many of them came here to attend one of the colleges and universities and many of them stay in the area after graduation or to pursue their post-grad studies. That means, there’s a lot of folks that are at the age where they are meeting their life partner and get engaged/married, which means there are a lot of folk who might potentially want to make their own wedding rings. There is also a vibrant arts scene in the city and several weekly/monthly markets where people can buy local handmade goods. I think the combination of having a population of a certain age and plenty of opportunities to appreciate and purchase local and handmade goods, my Wedding Ring Workshop.
