Meet Becky Brandt of Nurture Massage and Wellness in North Shore and Swampscott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Brandt.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Becky. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised north of Boston. I love to live and work in my seaside town. I wasn’t always here thought. I moved to Maine to Maryland to Boston. Several years after college with my BFA, I eventually chose a career path that I felt would be flexible as well as rewarding. Massage therapy fit into my holistic lifestyle and I learned this amazing facet of healing. Before being on my own, I work in massage locations that felt like a factory. I next worked for a chiropractor/massage therapist, who really inspired me and helped me go out on my own. I couldn’t have done it without them. I knew I needed to find a niche, and was drawn to prenatal massage. As a mom of young children, I was inspired to work on and help new moms like myself. I became certified in Prenatal, Perinatal, and Labor Massage Therapy in 2012. It was a wonderful training that prepared me to really help women through the aches and pains of pregnancy. I also became a certified infant massage educator in 2014. I now am a proud owner of my own massage therapy studio, Nurture Massage & Wellness of Swampscott. I love to help mothers and parents from all around the North Shore integrate healing massage into their lives and homes.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road I have taken has had obstacles, but I try to take them as lessons. Budgeting time wisely is a skill that is essential and constant! To build a massage practice alone with babies at home takes a tremendous amount of patience and grit. My children still need a lot of attention, so I sometimes leave my work for after their bed time. Moving from an independent contractor to a business owner was a huge responsibility. I felt a lot of pressure to have everything – website, office, decor – perfect and presentable. Over the past three years I have changed around the office many times, and have even added an extra room! Now, my business has been like sculpture – slowly I refine my creation until is just the way I want it!

Nurture Massage & Wellness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a solo massage practitioner specializing in prenatal massage therapy. My clientele is not limited to new mothers, however. I see a range of people with a variety of ailments. I am proud to be certified in Prenatal, Perinatal, and Labor Massage Therapy. I followed that up with a certification in Infant Massage Education. My intention is to bring massage therapy as a healing modality and loving touch into families’ lives.

My business’ name provides a sign of my focus – Nurture Massage & Wellness. As a mother, I understand a mother’s need for healing and bodywork is essential, however it is hard to find the time. I want to provide quality massage therapy for these mothers, and all caregivers. Those who are inherently nurturers often do not make time to care for themselves, and they are often who need it the most. I therefore create unique opportunities for them to get that care – even if it just fifteen minutes. This is what sets me apart from the rest. My intuitive approach and depth of pressure keep my clients returning.

I am most proud of the referrals I get from my clients and health professionals. When a client refers family or a colleague, or a doctor refers a patient, this tells me that I am doing something right.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Happiness, Good work ethic, Gratitude, Helping others. These are important markers for me to be a successful human being. Success for me is also the ability to grow and maintain a balance in life simultaneously. My attitude is to check in with myself often to notice my place is life and the world; is this where I wanted to be? How am I feeling about it all? If not, I am not a failure. I simply need to get on track again. Career wise, my criteria is to be financially stable and to have the satisfaction of accomplishing my goals. This is the great balancing act in the life of an LMT: a healthy, busy schedule, and setting time for self-care, family time, etc.

It is absolutely a cliché but still rings true- practice an attitude of gratitude. If I want to have my own massage practice and be a good mother, I need to be present physically AND mentally. I look around and absorb the fact that my life is happy overall. This good energy rubs off onto my client during the massage – pun intended. A good work ethic includes being present in the moment, as well as keeping a busy schedule. Being present in a session leads to a happy client leads to rescheduling, leads to a successful therapist.
