Today we’d like to introduce you to Hany Mostafa.
Hany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grow up In Egypt in a city called Damietta and that’s where is the Mediterranean Sea and Nile River meet it’s famous with painting and making furnitures. I moved to the USA (Boston) in September 2010 and started to work as a painter and selling fish in Haymarket in the weekend to earn enough income to support the family which was me and my wife Jazmin, she was pregnant with twins boy (Gamal) and girl (Jamilah) who was born later in 2011.
After that, I continue working in the Haymarket on weekends and doing the painting. Sometimes, it’s mostly was a seasonal job for me until, I had a good season I worked for a contracting company in the Boston area as a foreman but it’s started to slow down again as always and I wasn’t really have the knowledge to start a contracting business or painting. So, I decided me and my family need a regular job so, I moved on with another job which was driving a taxi in Newton area and later, I bought a car and started a small livery business as runs in and out of the airport and after that, I signed up with Uber and was still doing my side runs but expanded and hired drivers to work with me to have more than one shift of driving, it was good for long time and helped me to make a better living!
Until rules changed in the state about the new Apps driving become so popular and livery business started to go very down. So, I decided I have no option, I will go back to the trades and it’s something I really liked to do and I realize it’s going to give me bigger chance to expand my business and become who I really want to be. Then, I started to use also trades apps to get leads and started to learn estimating and also had to do the work my self too before I hire painters or carpenters to help me then. I started National Painting Service LLC two years ago to be doing commercial and residential painting and still continued using trades apps to get leads and social media like Facebook, etc.p
Few months after I started National Painting, I joined BNI in Wilmington area and put a lot of effort in it to make sure I gain the trust of other members of the group and make them and their business to trust National Painting to have their referrals for our business. And in 2018, we’re planning to expand with two more crews of painters and with economy the way it is now, we’re focusing more on the commercial side.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a small company, when it’s come to the trades business as we are a painting company, it always take time to build trust and as it’s hard to bless everyone we have to work on that all the time and make sure our customers are happy for the service we provide. Price is a big challenge as well, there is a lot of companies out there giving prices which is very low but never say what type of quality included with this prices. So, it’s a very tough competition but what makes it easier is the quality of work we like to provide.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Jazmin, my wife helped a lot as cheering up and always believed in me! I also learned a lot from one of my previous bosses, I learned a lot from him on the technical as well sales tips. My father was a hustler. For the last year, I been learning a lot from one of our BNI members on the sales side, I think I learned a lot from him. I should say, he is my mentor, he taught me a a lot in sales and told me a lot of good tips.
