Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Silverman.
Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In summary, Hot Mess started in the bar rooms of Faneuil Hall about 8 years ago and we somehow found our way to the grand ball room of the Waldorf Astoria and the giant stage of the Boston Convention Center. The following link has an overview of the band and individual bios for each band member. As of January 2018, we also added a KILLER horn section which is not yet featured on this link http://www.hotmessrocks.com/about/
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Easy? Weeeeelllll (pause and a smile) There have been different versions of the band since our inception. Reason being, this project started as some friends looking to simply “Jam” once or twice a month. As popularity grew, so did the demands of our schedule and that eventually led to our existing business model. Replacing band members (or family members, as we call them) is always a challenge. However, we have been blessed by being able to attract top local talent. Rule #1, we all have to GENUINELY like each other first, music is then second. If we can’t hang out together in the green room for three hours before showtime, it ain’t gonna work.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’d love to tell you about it. Although we have won Boston’s best wedding band two years running by The Boston A list, we actually consider Hot Mess kind of “The anti-Wedding Band”. Our mission is to bring as much authentic energy to each song we cover as the original artist. Then, we try to ensure the song sounds as much like the original artist as possible. We really feel like we owe it to the audience and the artist to keep the integrity of the music in tact. Hot Mess specializes in Top 40, pop, rock, R&B, soul, jazz, hip hop; really anything that has topped the Billboard charts is fair game for us. We have the luxury of boasting 5 unique vocalists, so really nothing is off limits. We also SHINE at festivals. Some of the Hot Mess band members have toured the world and been part of multi platinum selling bands so, for us, the bigger the stage, the bigger the show! This type of experience lends itself beautifully to large corporate events or some of the outdoor festivals we play every summer. I could go on all day but I guess I’ll just add the two secret ingredients to Hot Mess are: 1) our constant pursuit of perfection at every show we play. We don’t want every client to simply be “happy” with our performance; we want to ensure that each client and their guests are BLOWN AWAY by our performance! That is what you can expect every time you see this band play. 2) The level of experience each band member brings to the project. Hot Mess really is a super group of sorts, and it is amazing to watch how each of us inspires the other on stage every night. You simply don’t find this level of experience in every band member in other bands.
What were you like growing up?
I have always had a passion for music and performing. My mother was an artist and as such, had a lot of creative friends. She used to laugh and encourage my singing in the backseat of the car to bands like Boston, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, etc. She finally brought me to see my first live band at six years old. A good friend of hers had a regular gig at The Ground Round in Braintree MA. He brought me on stage and let me sing Angel Is The Centerfold by the J. Geils Band. It was MAGIC. I would go back every week after that and I even made a guitar out of a shoebox and elastic bands. It was awesome. That experience shaped who I am today and solidified my path. And to this day, anytime I see a young kid watching the band with that spark in their eye (be it at a wedding, festival, corporate event etc.), I always make it a point to bring them on stage and hand them a tambourine and a microphone. Pay it forward I guess. I was always an outgoing kid in school. I was a bit of a class clown and I had a great group of friends. I lost my mom when I was 13 and, that same year, I started my first rock band and never looked back. I had my 15 minutes of fame in my late teens and early 20’s when my original music was added to the regular rotation on Boston rock station WAAF, but it was all a prelude to Hot Mess. At the risk of not sounding too cliché, Hot Mess is more than a band, it’s a full on EXPERIENCE! Anyone that has hired us for an Event or Wedding can attest to that. We love to play music, we love to entertain AND WE ARE REALLY REALLY GOOD AT IT! Plus we have been fortunate enough to play for the BEST clients and audiences in and around Boston. But don’t take my word for it, come check us out live for yourself. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
