Meet Kelly Cianflone of Scky Photography in Medford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Cianflone.

Kelly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started shooting regularly for fun at a very young age, around 9 years old and got my first job in photography while in high school at 15, in a manual photo-lab and as an assistant for graduations and weddings coverage.
I went to college in Brazil for Social Communication/Photojournalism, also did a post grad in Anthropology and another one in Photography.

While in college, I worked for non-profit organizations and newspapers as a free lance photographer. My main interest was always in people, I love portraits and the felling of connection that they can bring along. My mother lived in the US for a long time already so after finishing school, I came to join her and my Irish American stepfather. Once here, I came back to shoot weddings and eventually decided to concentrate in portraits and further more into families, maternity and kids.

My studio Scky Photography is already 14 years old, we cater several different communities around us. As well as some further west and south.

In the past couple of years, the studio direction was being more and more focused in natural organic elements, we strive to have as much as natural light and organic props as possible as well as, in our style. I believe in shooting personalities and moments. The best pictures are the ones that captures a feeling. The studio is proudly handicap accessible and also pet friendly.

We are focused on giving back to the community. We love and welcome any and all chances to support the communities in the Boston area!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Up to 2015, the studio was growing to fast in number of employees, bookings and events. At some point, I felt we needed to focus more in one specific area and limit our bookings so, we could give a more personal touch to our costumer service.

That’s when we made a steady slow ongoing shift into what we are today, concentrating in organic materials, natural light. We moved to a beautiful new location, 2 years ago in Medford by the mystic river (it’s literally on our back yard), plus more convenient location for our clients too (@ route 60, near 16, 38 and 93).

We also added away weddings and some events to prioritize portrait sessions as maternity, newborn and families. Needless to say, we are very happy now.

Please tell us about Scky Photography.
I shoot mainly maternity, newborn and family portraits.

As a company, we are mostly proud of our attention to details and natural flow in creating the images and our organic approach to them. We only use natural flowers in our shoots, as well of non plastic, non-toxic props.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing on my journey, it’s what made me what I am today and I’m a firm believer that we are our scars as much as our trophies.
