Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Coughlin.
Carolyn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Coughlin Insurance Agency was started by Charles J Coughlin at his home in Dracut Massachusetts in 1970 as a captive agent for Nationwide Insurance. At the time, insurance was a door to door community business and home and auto insurance was the primary insurance products. As the company grew, Charles continued to widen his insurance offering by providing commercial insurance products and various financial services. To sustain growth, Charles built an insurance office in town, hired staff and diversified his insurance offerings by becoming an independent agent who offers products from multiple carriers, in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
Over past 45 years, Coughlin Insurance has grown from a small home run business to an agency serving thousands of customers, in more than five states. Today, while still active in the daily operations of the company, Charles has started to pass the organization onto Carolyn, his eldest daughter to continue to service the large customer base and grow the business. Through modernization, embracing technology, aggressive marketing and the identification of new insurance products and services, Carolyn has been able to create an extensive customer service organization which supports both existing and new customers alike.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, it has been a smooth ride. However, going from a captured agent to an independent agent did have some bumps, this required identifying new carriers and moving customers from one company to the next. Over the years, the company has established an excellent reputation which has resulted in a very loyal customer base. However, has the area grew so did the competition. Therefore, it was essential for Coughlin Insurance to continuous meet the needs of the customers and provide insurance products which continuously met their needs and stayed competitive. As a result, by creating superior customer service after the sale was paramount to Coughlin’s overall success.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
While the success of the business has been a great accomplishment, as it has allowed me to support my family and over the years support and give back to the community, my proudest moment is knowing Coughlin Insurance will continue as a family business, as operations are being transitioned to my daughter and the business will be there for the rest of my family and my grandchildren.
