Meet Amy Spirito Photography in South Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Spirito.

Amy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I photographed my first wedding before I even graduated high school. One of my teachers had an old friend that needed a budget wedding photographer, and I jumped at the opportunity. I rented a backup camera, didn’t sleep at all the night before, and took thousands of pictures on the wedding day. Driving home after the wedding, I was completely and totally hooked.

After graduating high school, I attended the prestigious Hallmark Institute of Photography in Western Massachusetts. Most students know that they want to pursue a career in photography but are unsure of exactly what field they’d like to go into. For me, it was a no-brainer… I needed to photograph weddings. I moved to Boston after graduating from photography school to start ASP (Amy Spirito Photography), and the rest is history!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
At first, getting my wedding photography business going was a little tricky. Financially, jumping into being a full-time freelance photographer wasn’t feasible right off the bat, so I had a handful of part-time jobs to help me float through the off-season. I also started my business when I was young, so unfortunately sometimes that was a deterrent for potential couples even though they loved my portfolio. And once things started to really get going (back in 2015), work-life balance became a pretty big struggle. That year I photographed and edited over 40 weddings and over 30 Engagement Sessions… it was common for me to work 7 days a week and still be editing until after midnight several times a week as well.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Amy Spirito Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in candid, photojournalistic, wedding photography. A lot of my work is very symmetrical and graphic in composition, so it’s an interesting combo! I’m proud of the wedding days that I’ve had the privilege to photograph, and so, so grateful for the couples that have allowed me to be a part of their big day.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
This is a hard question to answer. My family has always supported my dream to go into photography, and even bought me my first dlsr (a Nikon D5000). Throughout the past six years, I’ve been lucky and have had countless supporters/cheerleaders/teammates, and my clients have been the absolute best. And in school (both high school and photography school), I had so many teachers that supported me and believed in me, and I pretty much had the best mentor ever. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this without them.
