Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessa Sahakian.
Jessa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had a sweet tooth and culinary school seemed like a good way to satisfy the craving. I went to Johnson & Wales and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Baking and Pastry. Loved everything I learned, but mostly, loved cake decorating. I got myself a job at a local cake shop and worked my way up the ladder until I was designing and decorating cakes. After four years I felt I was ready to open my own shop. We opened the doors in 2007 and I’m still here, 10 years later. We specialize in custom cakes and cupcakes for all special occasions. We also offer specialty items: cake jars, cake slices, seasonal flavors and recently started PawCakes-healhy cupcakes for dogs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always struggles to overcome: the hours are long, hiring staff, identifying the right marketing strategies, competing with larger companies.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Yum Bunnies Cakery – what should we know?
We specialize in custom cakes and cupcakes for special occasions. We are known for the quality of our artistry and design skills. We have delicious cakes made from scratch. Our red velvet cake is a local favorite. We care about every age and our customers know they can trust us to create a special cake for their special occasion.
We were chosen to make the cakes featured in some great movies: Pink Panther 2, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Zookeeper and What’s Your Number? We were also contestants on Cupcake Wars.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My baker is my best friend and has been with me from the beginning. We laugh and cry together and make it work. I am so grateful for her support and hard work.
I have so many loyal customers who started with me 10 years ago with a bridal shower cake and now I’m making cakes for their children’s birthdays.
