Meet Chris Guerra of Domenic Guerra Landscape Design in Greater Boston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Guerra.

Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started working in the landscape business at a very young age because my grandfather was in the business so on Saturdays and summer vacations I would tag along and learned the trade. In 2003 when I was 17 I left school to work full time, by 2007 I knew I wanted to go off on my own and started promoting myself. I would walk for hours up and down the streets trying to flyer as many houses as I could. After work I would go do my own accounts and by 2012 when I had enough clients I quit the company I was working for to start my own, in 2014 I also bought another existing business to expand operations. Today we off a wide variety of services including weekly maintenance, new designs and installations, masonry, snow plowing & we even got into asphalt sealcoating in hopes to one day also offer paving.

Has it been a smooth road?
I thought it would be so easy, I was very wrong. Starting your own business was not only a scary thing but also very hard. You need capitol for one, trucks and equipment are very expensive. You need marketing especially in the beginning when you’re trying to get as many clients and jobs as possible, so constantly trying to promote yourself. Most importantly is you need patience, it takes a little bit of time to get where you want and need to be, it’s not going to happen overnight and it’s not going to be easy.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in all aspects of landscaping from coming in and planting all new shrubs and flowers and installing new lawns to maintaining that property on a weekly basis. We do hardscapes such as patios, walkways, steps and walls. We install irrigation systems, we offer pressure washing, fertilizer programs, we even offer asphalt sealcoating which protects the pavement from the brutal New England weather. Also, in the winter we offer snow service such as plowing, sanding/salting and snow removal as well. We hope to offer even more services in the future for now whatever the client needs they just ask and we do our best to get the job done. I think what sets my company apart from others is our attention to detail, I’m usually there with my crew working with them if I’m not I go to check on the work and I don’t leave until the customer is 100% satisfied and I know there’s not too many owners that do that especially with bigger companies. As a company I would say I’m proud of how far I came in a fairly short time when so many people doubted me and also in a very competitive and cut throat industry, every day I see a new company pop up and offer services for less than 50% of what the going rate is, the important thing for the consumer to remember is you get what you pay for.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I love this city and it’s a great market for the landscape industry. I would strongly recommend starting out here! There’s so many opportunities with commercial properties and residential properties especially in the suburbs where the land is bigger, and people just don’t have the time or proper tools to take care of their property.
