Meet Jessica Gordon of Jessica Gordon Academy of Performing Arts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gordon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started dancing at the age of 2 at Eleanor Rubino Academy of Performing Arts. I attended Salem State Universty and where I took a few dance classes and decided to major in dance. Durning that time my former dance teacher was retiring and offered me the studio to run. After a few years, I took over the studio under my name and moved the studio to Winthrop. This is where we are today still operating under my direction.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Some obstacles I faced early on was being a full-time student and running a dance studio while working part-time. I was only 21 at the time and it was very difficult trying to figure out how to run a business, handle my academics, and work was very stressful. Durning those times I remember feeling very overwhelmed with the responsibility of owning the studio and making all the decisions that needed to be made on a daily basis.

Jessica Gordon Academy of Performing Arts – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What I am most proud about in our studio is that we are like a family. The students have such an incredible bond with each other across all age levels. The parents are always willing to help not only me but each other. We always work as a team across all aspects in the studio which is such an amazing environment to work in.

Do you feel like our city is a good place for businesses like yours? If someone was just starting out, would you recommend them starting out here? If not, what can our city do to improve?
I feel like any activity that a child can take part in is great for the community. Winthrop is a small town on the outskirts of Boston and has so much pride in the town. Boston and the surrounding neighborhoods are full of so much diversity that it is a great place for anyone to start a business.
