Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Desai.
Linda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating from college in Boston, I relocated to Las Vegas to further my education and knowledge of the hospitality industry. I attended the International School of Hospitality for Event Planning and was also working a full-time job, coordinating weddings and events at some of the most luxurious hotels such as Bellagio and The Venetian. After gaining the necessary experience, I moved back to Boston and decided it was time to start my own small business and build my portfolio.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Naturally, as with any small business, there are always obstacles to overcome. Getting your foot in the door is probably the hardest part. I started off having to coordinate weddings free of charge just to get my name out there and get referrals. There is no better way to advertise your services than by word of mouth. It was definitely a sacrifice working long hours and not being compensated, but ultimately, it leads to a vast amount of amazing opportunities.
Lemon Drop Team – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Lemon Drop Team focuses mainly on month & day-of coordination. It’s geared towards couples who enjoy the wedding planning process but need assistance and guidance to put them on the right track, whether it’s vendor referrals, questions or suggestions, or just having a main contact person on the day-of to assist with the setup and time control.
What sets me apart from other wedding planners is that I have a lot of experience working with multicultural weddings, especially those incorporating Asian cultures. Planning a wedding is hard enough but adding in different religions and customs is a whole new layer of complexity. One of the most popular requests I get is to help with performing the Chinese Wedding Tea Ceremony. This is a time to show respect to the bride and groom’s elders, thanking them, and showing appreciation for having raised them.
I think what I’m most proud of as a company is after having done over 200 weddings, I still get a thrill out of seeing the look on the Bride and Groom’s faces on the most important day of their lives. That means I’m still doing what I love!!!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment is probably when I took all of my knowledge and experience that I had acquired over the years and applied it to my own wedding last year. It was, without a doubt, the happiest day of my life!
