Meet Maxine Hwang Blomberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxine Hwang Blomberg.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Trumbull, CT. I came to Boston to study art after getting accepted into Boston University. I worked my way through the 4 years of study and graduated 2010 with a BFA in sculpture, a minor in art history and student loan payments due.

I was able to move back to Boston with the help of a friend Crystal Connors (who was looking for a roommate at the time), and Izzy Berdan. (Mentor, Friend and Forever Boss.) I had been applying for jobs, looking for something to sustain a living and allow me to create my artwork in my own time and on my own dime. I met Izzy on an interview for a part-time barista position in the South End at the Greenlight Cafe (560 Harrison Ave.) He took a chance on me and I was grateful to have landed the job. We bonded over art theory, boys, life, and ran the crap out of that cafe. It was fun work because we made it so. Once I had earned some respect as an employee, Izzy facilitated with the Aquitaine Group my drawing on a chalk board right behind the register. He issued the creative license I needed to express my perspective publicly and seriously. I ordered some business cards and started to network/freelance offering pencil portraits, live drawing and chalk murals. I met many wonderful people serving lattes and started doing art projects for other businesses around the South End (Proverb, LLC; GTI Properties, OPTUM Labs) I ended up managing the cafe after Izzy was promoted to Creative Director of The Aquitaine Group and took Boston by storm with his photography work. Today, I continue to work and freelance in the area; steadily working to bring my personal projects to a close.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can’t complain. I’ve gotten burned in the business, but that’s learning.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am an independent freelance artist. For commissions and collaborations, I specialize in chalk signage/drawing, portraiture, and live-interactive artwork. I am ready and willing to work on most any project that piques my interest and wallet. I also create Headgear that I like to use as a tool for introspection.
