Meet Julie Blume Oeur of Blume Acupuncture & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Blume Oeur.

Julie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first discovered acupuncture while I was dancing with the Parsons Dance Company in New York City in the early 2000’s. I had a particularly nasty ankle injury that was making it difficult to perform, and I found myself in a similar place as many people when they first turn to acupuncture—at a point of desperation when I would try anything!

When I finally worked up the courage to make an acupuncture appointment, I was amazed by how comfortable and cared for I felt during the visit. And I was amazed by how a tiny needle painlessly inserted in my wrist alleviated pain from my ankle! The acupuncturist used bits of my medical history to help determine and treat the root cause of my issue, and sure enough, I made my way back to the stage performing with a smile I didn’t have to fake.

The holistic values and healing potential within Chinese Medicine quickly captured my interest. A few years later, after retiring from my dancing career, I made my way to Portland, Oregon to earn my Masters in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine—the top-ranked program in the country. I returned to the east coast in 2017 and opened Blume Acupuncture & Wellness in Stoneham where, in addition to acupuncture, I offer Chinese herbs, cupping, guasha, moxibustion, shiatsu and tuina massage. I am so glad to be sharing this fascinating medicine with my new Massachusetts community.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m blessed that it’s been a mostly smooth road. I love working with people to help them feel better and reach their wellness goals. I can honestly say that I love what I do every day!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in treating pain, infertility, mental-emotional imbalances, weight management, stress-reduction, and disease prevention. No matter what the chief complaint or health goal, I guarantee thoughtful care at every visit. Because I believe the match between provider and patient is a very important one, I always offer free consultations—over the phone or in person—so that people can determine whether Blume Acupuncture & Wellness is the right fit for them and their needs.

Blume Acupuncture & Wellness is conveniently located close to downtown Melrose, Stoneham, and Wakefield, with quick access to and from Interstate 93, ample parking, and ADA accessibility.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, my father always joked that I had a type A+ personality. I was a determined and hardworking kid who loved school almost as much as I loved dancing. I studied at the New Hampshire School of Ballet starting at the age of seven and worked my way through every roll in the Nutcracker from mouse to Sugar Plum Fairy.

In addition to dancing, I loved cross-country skiing, and on the weekends I wasn’t rehearsing for performances, I could be found racing with my high school Nordic team. I graduated valedictorian of my high school class and earned a scholarship to study at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where I majored in Dance and minored in Environmental Science. Before joining the Parsons Dance Company, I had the opportunity to perform as a soloist in Costa Rica on numerous occasions.

My most memorable performance was opening for a speech by His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama, who presented me with a khata scarf at the end of the event. I was with the Parsons Dance Company for five seasons, and with them was lucky to continue traveling the world as a performer. I have long been interested in the intersection of art and medicine, and often organized outreach events for dance companies to perform in hospital lobbies and at patient bedsides. Those were some of the most meaningful performances of my career.
