Meet Rick Fingerman of Financial Planning Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Fingerman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, I guess it all really started when I was nineteen and my dad died. My mom was 47 at the time and one of the last things my dad said to me was, “Take care of your mother” (and if you knew my mom, you knew this wasn’t an easy task!)

However, it did teach me some very valuable lessons. It wasn’t until years later, that these life events led me to a calling if you will. To help women prepare for life’s uncertainties as well as help prepare them for a secure financial life.

Looking back on it, I think how different a life my mom could have had if they had sat down with a financial planner.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, I’ve been helping folks for about 28 years and the early years were challenging. One thing it took me awhile to learn was, I couldn’t help those that didn’t want help even if I knew they needed it. Glad to say I hung in there.

Financial Planning Solutions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a small fee-based financial planning firm based in Newton, MA I specialize in financial issues specific to women and women in transition. Whether it is a recent widow I’m counseling or someone in the beginning or ending stages of a divorce, it brings me great satisfaction to help them through these difficult times.

As a Registered Investment Advisor, we take a fiduciary role, meaning we always put the client’s needs above anyone else. I would say that makes me most proud. And let’s me sleep better!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I was instrumental in the development of a pro bono financial coaching program between Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Financial Planning Association of MA. This initiative provides financial coaching to patients that need help navigating the various financial complexities and stress a cancer diagnosis brings.

We have helped over 400 families to date.
