Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Lauring and Susannah Miller.
Brandeis Pro-Choice started in the fall of 2016 by students, including the three current executive board members, Samantha, Susannah, and Abby. Last spring they became an official Planned Parenthood Generation Action chapter, which includes participating in legislative and electoral work with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Their club meets weekly and they are currently working to implement a Health and Wellness vending machine that would carry Plan B emergency contraception. They recently applied for and received a $5000 grant from the Planned Parenthood Action to use towards this initiative.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Fortunately, we have not had any major struggles trying to obtain the vending machine, as we have had enthusiastic support from students, staff, and members of the Brandeis community. Our greatest challenge right now is trying to move quickly to get this vending machine implemented as soon as possible.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Brandeis Pro-Choice – what should we know?
Brandeis Pro-Choice is a student-led club that meets weekly and serves as a resource and advocate for students. We provide avenues for students to get involved in reproductive justice, which includes lobbying, canvassing, doing electoral and legislative work, holding events on campus, and attending rallies. We are proud of the work we do on campus and in the greater Boston area, as well as the resources we provide. We are really excited about this Health and Wellness vending machine and are proud to be working to provide more accessible resources to current and future members of the Brandeis community.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
We have had a few major accomplishments this semester. We are very proud of receiving the $5000 grant from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund that will enable us to work towards our goal of implementing our Health and Wellness vending machine on campus. Another exciting moment this semester was when there was an article about Brandeis Pro-Choice receiving the grant on the front page of The Brandeis Hoot, one of the student newspapers.
