Today we’d like to introduce you to MO D..
MO, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
MoMo Boston Boutique was started for females in the Boston area looking for a place to shop for streetwear and sneakers, that wasn’t at a men’s store. Boston fashion, as unique and wonderful as it is, tends to be either very “dressy” or preppy. We wanted to create a comfortable space where women could shop for a style of clothing that is generally catered to the opposite sex, and be able to get honest opinion and styling feedback from other women.
It’s something that, after polling the community, many young women thought was desperately needed. Although the brick and mortar were meant to be a sort of a drawn out pop-up shop, I intend to continue catering to our customer base after the store closes.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business is never struggle-free. As the sole owner, I had to wear many hats throughout the whole process and it can get very stressful, very quickly. As a small business start-up, funds are definitely limited and competing with the big-brand companies is hard. You have to be constantly creative.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the MOMO BOSTON story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in casual, cozy clothing for girls. We’re known for our slogan hoodies, girl-power apparel, humorous graphic tees, and sneakers. I’m most proud of the reaction and positive feedback we get from new customers who come into the store.
Most are very happy that we exist and cater mainly to women. They’re happy they have a place where they can come, buy their own cozy hoodies and no longer have to steal their boyfriends. They’re also happy they can find said item in their size!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the industry catering more to the “tomboys” and girls who love streetwear. I already see it happening now.
