Meet of Wellesley Farmers’ Market in Wellesley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Welleslet Farmers’ Market.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
A group of residents worked to create the Wellesley Farmers’ Market more than 5 years ago to support local food growers and producers, celebrate seasonal, local, sustainably grown foods, all while serving our community and complementing Wellesley’s sustainability movement.

This has always been the mission and the team has tweaked the market a few times to really build it for this community. Now, the market is a pre-order model which provides a wider variety of products, offers a longer season and is highly efficient for the small, local, family farmers. They offer hundreds of farm fresh and organic products, including vegetables, meats, fish, dairy, eggs, bakery and pantry items, fruits, juices, pet and home offerings from more than 80 New England farmers and food producers.

Residents and food lovers who work in and around Wellesley can pick up their order or have it delivered by a local pedal-powered business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have tried 2 locations, a few different days/hours and have now moved to a pre-order model to be able to offer the most products, in a longer season to a broader audience.

Wellesley Farmers’ Market – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The volunteer team has a variety of backgrounds but share a passion to offer local, healthy grown food to our community, including our food pantry customers. Instead of purchasing foods that have traveled thousands of miles before you eat it, eating locally provides tastier, more nutritious foods and less of an impact on our shared environment.

Supporting small-scale farmers and producers who lovingly steward their land and enrich their communities is also a huge benefit. We value a regional food system that sustainably feeds us.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success would be:
1) increasing the amount of the community eating locally
2) increasing the amount of donations/sponsorship that allows the Wellesley Food Pantry to purchase local farm produce that goes directly to their clientele weekly. The Wellesley Farmers’ Market team dedicated to serving the food insecure in this community.
