Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Svoronos.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dennis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Artist Operation was an idea generated by necessity. We began as a small group of freshly graduated art students; myself, Rory Beerits and my wife TT Svoronos. With our degrees in hand we immediately encountered the obvious problem, how do we make a living? As many artists do, we began working and teaching at local institutions, we became studio assistants for more renowned artists in the area, but ultimately, these options afforded little time to pursue our own artistic careers. By being our own bosses, we saw an opportunity to make more art, and money, as well as be a resource for our community.
With our experiences from so many diverse areas of the fine arts (metalworking, woodworking, jewelry making, casting, carpentry, painting, etc.) we had the skills to begin something unique in Boston, and valuable to artists and designers. We set up our facility in 2012 in a South Boston studio building, where we’ve been working and collaborating with our city’s artist community ever since. As a business owned and run by artists, we are able to enhance our community of artists by providing private classes, custom fabrication services, design consultation, installation services – really anything a creative person could need.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a business centered around the arts, we have always encountered roadblocks along the way. From a lack of funding to a lack of public awareness, we face the same struggles that the arts face nationally. Part of our charge is to incite interest and engagement for the good of our entire community. The greatest threat to the arts is apathy.
Artist Operation – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Artist Operation is a one of a kind organization, so categorizing ourselves isn’t easy. There is an enormous range of things we make, do and provide. We could be painting a small puppy portrait on Monday, and Tuesday we could be welding a gigantic public art project. We strive to help artists and designers through every step of their process; from crafting plans and proposals to the creation and installation of those ideas. If you have a creative problem, odds are we can help you solve it.
We offer individual and group classes for those interested in gaining skills and starting their careers, as well as simply providing space and tools for artists that don’t have space at home. We provide installation services to collectors, galleries, and institutions, where an artistic eye and careful touch is always welcomed. Numerous authors come to us for illustrations, graphic design, and layout. We also endeavor to preserve the art of New England by providing conservation services for the public works of many cities and towns in Massachusetts.
As diverse as the arts can be, we are just as diverse in the services and assistance we provide for the arts.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is having the time to pursue my own creative work, and support the creative work of those around me. By its very design, Artist Operation meets and exceed those criteria.
