Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy V. Brown.
Nancy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came to the United States from Costa Rica at age nine. Costa Rica is full of culture and art, and I have carried these pieces of my country with me my whole life. When we arrived in the US, my mother started cosmetology classes, but never worked in the field. Some months later I discovered her books and mannequins in a closet.
Using my cousin as a guinea pig, I practiced the basic hair braiding techniques I saw in my mother’s old books. Even at a young age, I truly developed a taste for more. I was blessed to have grown up in an era where hair was art. I spent hours watching the old school stylists creating masterpieces– I learned that hair styling is a form of self-expression, both for the wearer and for the stylists.
At age 15, I had my first experience with chemical hair damage, and I was devastated. I channeled my artistic energy into solving the problem, dreaming up and testing out different techniques I could use on myself and on my cousins. I took that test and I turned it into testimony. People started noticing my work around town, and I started to realize how helpful my gift was.
As I got older, I continued my formal education, receiving many certificates, training and a wealth of hands-on experiences. Now, I specialize in hair restorative services by providing Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) treatments, as well as hair weaving, extension services and I am also an insurance wig provider. I work with adults, teens, and children who are battling hair loss and am very emotionally bound to my clients, I truly care about their journey.
As my Salon business has grown I have also explored my other passions in life, including mentoring young women through my nonprofit BRAVE GIRLS, RISE UP, and spirituality through my work as a Christian Life Coach and ministry training.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve faced many challenges on my road to success. My life started in the poorest neighborhood in Costa Rica, where I was raised by my hardworking mother and faced many trials and tribulations. When I came to the United States I was presented with a new set of challenges that set me on a course towards Boston’s Department of Social Services.
Through this experience, I was able to find a new path for myself and discover my passion for helping others. I’ve carried this through my entrepreneurial journey and opened myself up to God’s call. This inspired me to follow my passions by opening up my nonprofit for young girls, my hair salons to build up women’s confidence and helping others find the path to righteousness.
