Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Baker.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tracy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became an instructor for someone else (working as an independent contractor) in the late 1990’s. I really enjoyed teaching CPR and First Aid. I loved to see people’s faces when they actually understood not only what they were supposed to do, but why they did it. It was also gratifying to know that each person was leaving knowing how to help someone else in an emergency. I loved it so much that in May of 2003 I decided to start my own small business training people in CPR, AED, and First Aid.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth it is ever smooth!
When I decided to start my own business, the person who I used to work for was not happy and came after me full throttle. This “knocked the wind” out of me, but not “the life” out of me. It was totally unexpected and disheartening, but despite it all, I knew what I was doing was not just to make money, but to help others to have the skills necessary to save someone in an emergency situation, so I kept the business going.
Although I still face challenges with the business, that was by far, the biggest challenge.
Compressions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Compression provides certification and training in CPR, AED and First Aid to laypeople. This training is given in the comfort of one’s home or work facility (although we are now trying to establish some places in the community where we can have training once a month in 2018).
As a small business, I am most proud of the fact that I was able to start my own business.
What sets Compressions apart from others is that most focus on making money (and that’s not bad), but we are able to focus on helping others!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I went to do a retraining in a daycare and they began to tell me how they actually had to use the skills they had learned from Compressions to help someone who passed out in front of their building! I was so proud of them!
