Meet Gregg Smith of GS-Fitness/CORE Boot Camp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregg Smith.

Gregg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in college I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do with my life, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. Like a lot of people I’m sure. But, I grew attracted to the sports, fitness and leisure program at Salem State University. I was an athlete in high school enjoyed training an conditioning my own body. I also have a history of heart disease in my family. My father died at the very young age of 45. That’s young! And that scares me. I think about that every day. My mother was left with five kids to raise all on her own. No small task.

Seeing the impact that one individual’s health can have on one family is a big reason I do what I do now. I got a bachelor’s degree from Salem State University in sports, fitness and leisure. I then went on to get a master’s degree in physical education from Bridgewater State University. I’ve now been in the industry since 1998. I’ve worked at large, multipurpose athletic clubs, one on one training studios and even college campuses. I’ve gained a lot of different experience from each place of work. I’ve used that experience to develop my signature group fitness program. CORE Boot Camp. I’ve been working for myself for about ten years now,

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This industry is a grind, was a grind and will always be a grind. I’ve been laid off a couple of times and have had to create a full-time income on my own essentially. The biggest obstacle for me was learning a business plan or plan of action. I went to school for anatomy, physiology, metabolism etc. Not marketing, business development or anything like that. I’ve had to invest in that part of the business and learn how to do those things. This is definitely one industry where you can never learn too much.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the GS-Fitness LLC/CORE Boot Camp story. Tell us more about the business.
I currently have to sides with my business. The first being the group fitness program I call CORE Boot Camp. This is a group training program different from most fitness boot camps in a lot of ways, The most important difference is the individual attention clients get within the group. This is more of a group personal training program as opposed to a group fitness class where instructors are yelling instructions and not giving each and every individual participant the specific attention they may need. I’m really proud of being able to create what I strongly feel is the best way to run a group program. Incidence of injury is far lower than the standard program, results are more likely to be achieved leading to increased adherence.

The second part of my business is the in-home one on one training I do. I get a lot of referrals from a concierge doctor’s practice in Chestnut Hill. It’s a good feeling knowing that one of the top doctor’s in the Boston area trusts you with his patients.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am lucky to be working with the city of Newton since 2009 with my CORE Boot Camp program. They have been very accommodating. I am still waiting for that big opportunity where a big company or group call on me to provide health and fitness services to their employees or group. Generally speaking, you have to create your own luck in any position you hold or endeavor you embark on.

Pricing:

  • CORE Boot Camp monthly memberships are priced between $99 – $149/month depending on the length of commitment.
  • One on one personal training sessions are 1 hour in length and cost $95 per session.
