Meet Darren Pellegrino of Boston Creative Headshots in South End

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darren Pellegrino.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Darren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always loved photography even from an early age. It was in high school where I first picked up a camera and worked in the darkroom developing film. Unfortunately the desire to take pictures laid dormant until the early 2000’s when I started traveling and wanted to document our travels and experiences. I was then working secularly in the engineering field and building up a travel portfolio on the side. I knew I wanted to make a career change so in 2004 I started slowly by creating a stock portfolio and doing some gigs on the side which eventually lead to weddings, food and restaurant photography and some commercial work. Then in 2008 I started Boston Creative Headshots which has completely blown away my expectations.

Has it been a smooth road?
I started Boston Creative Headshots at the height of the recession in 2008. I felt confident in the idea but the big question was whether the timing was right or not. Social media was starting its rise in popularity and site likes LinkedIn were creating an even bigger market for business style portraits. Having a personal brand and a web presence made headshots in high demand but with the economy at a low point I didn’t know if people would be willing to invest in these new necessities. The other challenge was finding an affordable studio location to grow my business.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I have grown up in and around the Boston area and love the diversity as well as the intimate size and small town feel. Boston has been experiencing a boom in recent years and unfortunately this has brought super high prices for rental and living space.
