Meet Christine D’Amico Owner and Alexis Gates Head Trainer of Burn Boot Camp Newton in Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine D’Amico and Alexis Gates.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Christine and Alexis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up playing sports all my life and being an athlete was a huge part of my identity. When I graduated from college, and my time as an athlete came to an end, something was missing in my life. I was going through the motions of life with a full-time, corporate job. I struggled to find the time and motivation to workout and missed the structure of a workout routine and the built-in community that came with being part of a team.

I would go to the gym, run on a treadmill for 20 minutes (because I thought that running was the only way to be “skinny”), do about 15 crunches and go home. I did this day after day and, not only did I not see any results, but I felt like I was spending what little free time I had doing something I hated. It wasn’t until I discovered strength training and group fitness classes that I rediscovered what it felt like to do something I was passionate about. As I got stronger physically, I got even stronger mentally.

My workout became the best part of my day and the best part of my day was over by 7 am. I had always dreamed of owning my own business growing up but always just assumed it would remain a dream. The confidence I gained in the gym was translating into confidence outside of the gym and was the final push I needed to pursue my dream of owning a business. I wanted to combine my business background with my love for fitness and open a gym.

I didn’t want to open just any gym though, I wanted to open a gym that combined the aspects of what I had gained over the past couple of years strength training with what I loved about being part of a team growing up. Before I ever stepped foot in a Burn Boot Camp, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for and I haven’t looked back since that day in July 2016.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road but I also know that every struggle along the way has been a learning experience. I kept telling myself each time there was a setback, a delay, an obstacle, or a mistake that if it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you. That is actually a standard Burn Boot Camp quote and one that we will have on the wall in the gym. It’s one I have lived by because I knew where I was previously at in my career, and my life, that I was very comfortable but the passion for what I was doing was not there. I had to challenge myself to do something out of my comfort zone if I wanted to change my life.

Burn Boot Camp Newton – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Burn Boot Camp is a lifestyle fitness facility designed to inspire, empower, and transform the lives of busy women and their families. We provide a positive mindset and environment for women and motivate one another to get better every day. The Burn Boot Camp franchise has transformed the lives of thousands of women across the country and we can’t wait to bring this concept to Newton women and women in the surrounding areas.

What makes me most proud to be part of this franchise is the genuine impact that this gym has had on so many lives across the country. We measure our success by the number of people we impact. We know that living a healthy life is more than just going to the gym. Health is what you’re thinking, what you’re eating and how you view yourself. We have a 5 pillar philosophy and #1 is mindset because what we push these women to accomplish in the gym stays with them long after the workout is over.

To change your body, you have to change your mind. In addition to offering a different 45-minute workout every single day, our memberships include nutritional guidance, body diagnostics, and one on one meetings with our trainers. We also offer free childcare so moms can come to camp and workout without the stress of finding childcare. So many moms and women, in general, put everyone’s needs ahead of their own and we want to be the place women can come to focus on themselves.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think the proudest moment of my career is coming soon. That moment will be when I get to see women accomplishing their goals in our gym and doing things they never thought possible.
