Today we’d like to introduce you to Marybeth Briano.
Marybeth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a love for science and helping others. Growing up, I’ve had my own medical struggles, including mystery health issues which went undiagnosed, 7 knee surgeries, and hip surgery. After countless efforts to relieve my pain, I decided to try acupuncture. I received more profound relief from acupuncture than cortisone shots, medications, and multiple surgeries. Throughout all of this, I was in nursing school at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, where I received my BSN degree.
I worked as a nurse for a few years and was in the process of applying to graduate school to get my Nurse Practitioner degree, and one day while I was walking home from an acupuncture appointment in downtown Boston it hit me…I needed to go to acupuncture school! I wanted to be able to help people in ways that actually worked, to find the root of their suffering rather than putting a band-aid on their pain with multiple shots and pills. And now, 4 years later…I’m the owner of Your Wellness Acupuncture on Newbury S. I still hold my RN license in the state of MA, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest struggle I faced was the decision: “should I start my own business?” Statistically, most businesses fail, and I did not want to be part of that statistic. It would have been safe for me to either continue working as a nurse and be an acupuncturist part-time, or to work for someone else as an acupuncturist. I have always played it safe in my life because I believed I thrived off consistency; however, sometimes you have to just throw caution to the wind! I made the choice one day to go for it and start my own acupuncture business. I wanted to be able to pour my heart and soul into my practice and my patients and to create my own healing space. The stress of owning my own practice is worth it when I am able to help improve the quality of life of my patients.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Your Wellness Acupuncture story. Tell us more about the business.
I own Your Wellness Acupuncture right in the heart of Back Bay Boston on Newbury St. I work out of one room, meaning my patients get my undivided attention for the entirety of their treatment. I have designed my schedule to accommodate spending more time focusing on comprehensive health intakes and individual treatment plans. I specialize in Japanese style acupuncture which involves thinner needles and a gentle technique, but is still very effective!
The top 3 things I treat are pain, stress, and wrinkles (yes, wrinkles, I also specialize in facial rejuvenation acupuncture). Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is an all-natural way to help promote the production of collagen, smooth fine lines, and wrinkles, subtly lift the face, decrease the appearance of dark circles, even out uneven skin tone, and promote an overall healthier self. With the combination of my nursing background and acupuncture degree, I bring a unique perspective to my practice.
I am grateful to have been able to design a practice that infuses the strengths of Western and Eastern medicine and to be able to give others the care that I wish I had access to in my youth.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think that bad luck compelled me to study this medicine, and good luck helped me into the position I am in today. If it was not for all the medical struggles I had growing up, I probably would not have gone into the medical profession; when I was young I thought I would be an engineer like my father. I have the utmost empathy for my patients because I completely understand how debilitating chronic pain can be, both mentally and physically.
However, I am grateful that my past suffering brought me to where I am today. I know this sounds cliche, but they say “if you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life” and I’m lucky enough to be living this statement.
