Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Andrew Bernard.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Houston Andrew. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Oklahoma, grew up in Alaska and Worcester Mass. I went to Worcester State College through the US Army. I studied communications with a focus on marketing. I moved to NYC after graduation and toured Europe and North America playing music for a few years. In 2006 I got tired of sleeping on couches and thought I would learn massage. I grew up around it and had a natural ability and understanding of its importance.
Once I went to massage school I became even more passionate about it. Eventually I became medically certified and started teaching deep tissue classes. For the first couple years I worked at a couple spas and franchises. I found that there was a level of integrity being lost in the work and the way therapists were being treated. A lot of time we would sit there all day and not get paid waiting for clients or get paid so low it was like a sweatshop. At that time they were licensing therapists per town. Currently, it’s a state license. Still, there was something missing. In 2008 I officially started Mass Mobile Massage.
I started building my own mobile massage clients and eventually hotels and other clients wanted couples massage or chair massage for events and I asked my friends to join me. I was keeping integrity, being reliable and also being a local company means something to a lot of people. We invest in our community and the owner is a massage therapist; this matters. We are not a referral service we are a team and this creates great work culture and a learning atmosphere which ultimately helps the clients and most therapists stay with us for years.
We also helped make it affordable for clients. We worked with all types of clients, pro athletes and dancers and most of the top hotels in Boston but we always bring our best work; every client is a VIP. Our membership for $79 per month and $65 for additional became very popular for our local clients and 30-40% off for package discounts.
We promise reliability, accountability and we always make it right. Sometimes you have a great massage therapist but they are not reliable or they leave town for a month or forever and the search starts all over again for the client. With MMM you don’t have to do that, I am always searching for quality new team members. We have been lucky that we have attracted some of the best massage therapists in Boston to join our team. We keep integrity for the massage therapist and we always make it right for the client.
Today we have several exclusive contracts with hotels, we work with quite a few fortune 500 companies in Greater Boston, we help quite a few charities and we have grown at least 20% every year. IN 2013 we doubled in sales and in 2015 2 companies tried to buy us out.
We have been featured on Chronicle twice, been in Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Improper Bostonian, Boston Common magazine and more.
The most important thing to me as the owner is that we continue to improve, grow and help more of the Boston community. I love Boston, it is by far my favorite city I have been and I sincerely know how lucky I am to be here and have the support of the community. Thanks Boston!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding quality massage therapists that have good communication skills is the most challenging, but we do accomplish it. Also, trying to help clients who are in their worst state. They are stressed out or in pain. We do everything in our power to help them. We are pretty flexible and I pride myself in being able to come up with solutions for clients and team members. I am always available to clients 7 days a week 14 hours+ a day.
Mass Mobile Massage – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in mobile massage, on-site massage for table or chair massage for all occasions. In Home, hotels, Work, school, all events, relaxation massages, medical massages, corporate chair massage, spa parties anything mobile we cover. We charge by the time not the modality. 7 days a week 9am-9pm outside of these times we charge a small fee.
What sets us apart is our level of discipline and reliability as well as our level of quality. Our team eventually gets medically certified and I cover 50% of that cost for our team.
What I am most proud of is the attention to detail that we give and how the community has really appreciated the hard work that we do and shows us this appreciation through referrals and long-time loyalty.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being featured on Chronicle was a big deal for us. We were taken seriously by an entire city, when I started doing massage people were still trying to make silly massage jokes. With the enormous boom of massage in the past 10 years it really tells me my passion for helping others came at the right time and helping people never gets old. I also am very proud of creating our first functioning app for iPhone and android. It is a big step for us.
