Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Weiss.
After graduating Brandeis University in Waltham, MA and then law school, Matthew practiced law for 30+ years, Over lunch with his banker, Jeff Crowther, Matt learned about Jeff’s son, Welles Crowther. Welles was a graduate of Boston College and a victim of the 9/11 disaster. Matt was blown away by Welles’ heroics and how it all came to light due to an ordinary object … a red bandana. He was utterly amazed how a piece of fabric, a bandana, could change the Crowther’s perspective on their loss and actually create an incredible legacy. While there are filmmakers that look for stories, this was a story that had found a filmmaker.
Has it been a smooth road?
Making a film about someone I never met was a challenge especially because I never went to film school, took a class in filmmaking or read a book on filmmaking. Adding to this difficulty was the fact that we had very little video footage of Welles … only about 40 seconds. However, after 6 years of effort, the film entitled “Man In Red Bandana” was completed and released in September 2017. It won a grand prize at the Rhode Island International Film Festival and has qualified for Oscar consideration in the feature documentary category.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the RDZ Production, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
My company’s name is RDZ Productions, LLC. We produce films such as “Man In Red Bandana” and the in-production film “Vault”.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The film industry is a constant change of flux. We see great changes coming due to web streaming services and pressures to get films out of theaters quicker and more readily available for at home viewing.
