Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started here at Middlesex working the door for our founding General Manager Jason Tobin, then moved on to service and eventually AGM under (then GM) JB Bernstein and finally to General Manager when he left.
Has it been a smooth road?
There are always challenges. We adapt and evolve.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Middlesex Lounge story. Tell us more about the business.
Middlesex lounge exists to host good times. We have been called the dance club for people that do not like dance clubs. We are proud about being different than most of the dance club experiences people will typically have in the city. We are known for having good music and hiring DJs with a keen ear for music selection and a sharp eye on how the crowd is digging it. We don’t want someone coming in that will just play all the top40 tracks or only play requests because that is something a JukeBox could do. We like people that have an open mind and want to hear some good music with little pretense. We are a square room that fits 120 people and has booming speakers and a full bar, we operate on strictly good vibes only and have been known to ask jerks to take the night off. It’s not for everyone.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
People will always want to dance and drink and socialize. As the neighborhood changes, it will be interesting to see where we fit in. We used to be a destination but now this area is being rapidly developed around us. Can a nightclub exist between big money industry offices and luxury condos?
