Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Memory and Katrina Baker.
Jim and Katrina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Katrina and I met in a massage office 2004, where we worked together for the next 5 years, building up a solid reputation and clientele in the Boston area.
Over that time, as we realized that our interests in hiking, biking, and being active aligned, our relationship grew into a personal one. We began to discuss our ideas for a business while spending time together doing the things we love, which gave us the inspiration to open our own office, Be Well Boston, in 2009.
We began by renting space in a chiropractor’s office, and eventually expanded to our own space, and now employ four other therapists. We continue to grow each year and are excited about what the future holds!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our road hasn’t been terribly difficult, but like any small business, we’ve experienced our share of challenges. Katrina and I both had solid reputations in the Back Bay before opening our own practice, so, fortunately, it didn’t take us long to become steadily booked.
Greater challenges arose when bringing on new therapists. We have high expectations for the quality of therapists who we want to be part of our practice, so it can take quite a long time to find the right candidate. With this comes marketing our new therapists, which can be challenging as well due to our lack of business experience. We continue to learn by trial and error but have found that connecting with local physical therapists, personal trainers, and other healthcare professionals have benefitted us the most thus far.
Ultimately the challenge of wearing multiple hats, one of the therapists, one of the manager, and one of the business owner, has and will continue to be the greatest.
Be Well Boston – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
BWB specializes in deep tissue and therapeutic massage. We use the phrase “clinical massage” to differentiate ourselves from spas, and other practices whose primary focus is relaxation.
The large majority of our clients are active, healthy people, seeking out massage as part of their regular wellness routines. We treat clients with issues ranging from chronic pain to more acute muscular dysfunctions. Our clientele includes everyone from weekend warriors to professional triathletes, as well as musicians, expecting moms and anyone interested in using our services to feel their best.
What sets us apart from other offices is our experience, knowledge base, passion, and the relationships we build with our clients which prove to be very long lasting.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We’ve been fortunate to see our business grow and thrive over the past eight years, which we’re definitely very proud of.
On a more regular basis, we’re always proud to see our therapists come to work happy and succeed in our office. To hear clients tell us how happy they are with our services as well as the great reviews we’ve received over the years let us know that we’re doing something right!
